Finnian Garbutt, the 28-year-old actor best known for his role as PC Ryan Power on the BBC crime drama Hope Street, has made a heartfelt plea for financial support through a GoFundMe campaign. This comes as he tragically revealed that his cancer has progressed to its final stages, leaving him focused on securing a future for his young family.
A Desperate Fundraising Effort for Loved Ones
In a recent Instagram post, Garbutt expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received from fans and well-wishers worldwide. He emphasised that his motivation for launching the fundraiser is not to seek sympathy but to ensure his wife and baby daughter can maintain stability after his passing. "All I want is my wife and little baby to have the life they deserve," he wrote, acknowledging that he can no longer provide for them as he had hoped.
Four-Year Battle with Aggressive Cancer
Garbutt's health struggles began four years ago when he discovered a lump behind his ear, initially mistaking it for an ingrown hair. After his barber noticed significant growth, he sought medical attention and received a devastating diagnosis of Stage 3 skin cancer. The disease quickly spread to his neck, leading to a gruelling 12-hour surgery that removed 75 lymph nodes from his face and neck.
Despite this aggressive treatment, the cancer has recently advanced rapidly. Garbutt shared an update on Instagram, explaining that scans revealed the illness has spread throughout his body, prompting doctors to declare he is now in the "last stages of life." He described experiencing pain in his back and hip, which led to his admission for observation and further testing.
Achieving Life Goals Amid Adversity
Reflecting on his journey, Garbutt highlighted the personal milestones he has achieved since his diagnosis. These include starring in 30 episodes of Hope Street, landing a lead role in an upcoming film, purchasing a home, marrying his best friend, and becoming a father to a baby girl who brings him constant joy. "I have achieved so many of my life goals," he stated, expressing a desire to cherish his remaining time with family and friends.
Emotional Revelations and Public Outreach
In an interview with Belfast Live, Garbutt opened up about the emotional toll of his diagnosis, describing how his world "came crashing down" when doctors warned him of the potential fatality of his condition. He recounted feeling as though the diagnosis was a mistake and mentally preparing for the worst, expecting to hear that tumours had spread elsewhere in his body.
Garbutt has also appeared in other BBC productions, such as Casualty, further cementing his presence in the television industry. His GoFundMe campaign aims to cover expenses for his wife and daughter, including securing their home and supporting his daughter's future. He concluded his Instagram message by inviting friends and supporters to connect for a pint or coffee, signing off with "Love as always, Finnian."
