British Cancer Patient in Critical Condition After Stroke on Indian Beach
A 66-year-old British man, battling lung cancer for six years, is fighting for his life in India after suffering a devastating stroke during a holiday with his wife. Wayne Muress, a retired fisherman from Grimsby, was enjoying a trip to Goa when the medical emergency struck on a beach, turning a dream vacation into a nightmare.
Holiday Horror Unfolds in Goa
Wayne Muress and his wife Maggie had travelled to Goa for a 21-day holiday, aiming to "enjoy life the best they can" following his lung cancer diagnosis, which forced him into retirement. The couple were due to fly home on Saturday, but Maggie noticed something was wrong with Wayne's leg while they were on the beach. His right leg began shaking uncontrollably, and his face started drooping, clear signs of a stroke.
Sam Piggott, Wayne's nephew's wife, recounted the terrifying moment to The Mirror. "She'd said to him, 'What's up?' And he said, 'I don't know'. With that, his face dropped and his arm... he was having a stroke," Sam explained. People on the beach helped place Wayne onto a sun lounger before he was rushed to a local hospital.
Medical Crisis and Mounting Costs
Initially awake when admitted, Wayne's condition quickly deteriorated. He was placed into an induced coma and underwent a tracheostomy to assist with breathing. Although he has been taken out of the induced coma, he has not yet woken up. Doctors suspect he may now be suffering from pneumonia as well.
The financial burden has been overwhelming for the family. Maggie's first medical bill amounted to £6,000, with an additional £1,400 per day for his stay at a private hospital. Wayne has since been moved to a government hospital to reduce costs. Compounding the crisis, Wayne did not have travel insurance due to his pre-existing lung cancer, which would have made premiums prohibitively expensive.
Family's Desperate Plea for Support
A GoFundMe page has been established to help cover Wayne's medical expenses and fund a future repatriation flight to bring him back to the UK. The family has expressed deep gratitude for the donations received so far, which have gone directly towards his treatment. Sam shared that Maggie is "overwhelmed" by the support, noting that the couple have been together for 30 years and are inseparable.
Sam lamented the timing of the stroke, saying, "I'm just gutted... why didn't it happen when he was in his own country?" Maggie and one of Wayne's best friends remain by his side in Goa during this difficult time.
Community Rallies Behind Beloved Fisherman
Described as a dedicated West Ham United fan, Wayne was pictured wearing the team's apparel on his holiday. Sam highlighted his strong work ethic, having worked as a fisherman for 17 years and travelling far to provide for his family even after the fishing industry declined in Grimsby. "The love of his community speaks volumes of the man he is," she added.
The family continues to hope for Wayne's recovery and is focused on navigating the complex process of bringing him home once he stabilises.
