British Teen's Organs Save Five Lives After Vietnam Gap Year Tragedy

The parents of a British teenager killed in a motorbike accident during her gap year in Vietnam have expressed profound gratitude to hospital staff after flying to the country to say their final goodbyes. Orla Wates, a 19-year-old student, tragically lost her life following a crash on the renowned Hà Giang Loop, a 250-mile mountain route that attracts numerous young travellers.

A Life Cut Short

Orla Wates was the daughter of prominent British building tycoon Andrew Wates, a director of the £2.4 billion construction firm Wates. She had been exploring Vietnam on her gap year before planning to commence an anthropology degree at Durham University. Previously, she attended the prestigious Stowe School in Buckinghamshire.

Following the motorcycle accident, Orla was urgently transported to Hanoi's Việt Đức Friendship Hospital but succumbed to her injuries last Thursday. The incident occurred while she was riding as a passenger on the back of a motorcycle; the driver reportedly lost control, causing Orla to be thrown to the ground and subsequently run over by an oncoming truck, resulting in extensive injuries.

A Noble Decision Amid Grief

In a remarkable act of compassion, Orla's family consented to organ donation, a decision that ultimately saved the lives of five critically ill Vietnamese patients. Her liver, two kidneys, and two corneas were successfully transplanted at the hospital.

Andrew Wates, 56, and his wife Henrietta, 53, travelled to Vietnam following the tragedy and participated in an appreciation ceremony at the hospital. "I would like to really say thank you to the doctor and his team for doing such an amazing job for Orla," Mr Wates stated. "In this case, it wasn't to be but we know we were lucky enough to get here and see her."

He emphasized that the organ donation was something his daughter would have wanted, adding, "As you know, my wife and I were very, very keen in our family, very keen that Orla had lived on in Vietnam. We were lucky and privileged enough to see the patients today and we just wish them every success in their future."

Hospital and Diplomatic Responses

Dr Dương Đức Hùng, director of Việt Đức University Hospital, confirmed that all recipients of the transplanted organs are recovering well. Addressing Orla's family, he said, "We fully understand that the passing of your daughter is an immense and heartbreaking loss for your family. Yet, in the midst of such profound grief, you made a remarkably humanitarian decision – one that has given other patients a renewed chance at life."

He noted that this represents the first instance of organ donation from a foreign citizen to a Vietnamese hospital, describing it as a gesture that strengthens solidarity between Vietnam and the United Kingdom.

Iain Frew, Britain's ambassador to Vietnam, also attended the ceremony and thanked hospital staff for their efforts. "I want to thank the hospital for its work to support trying to save all them, and for the work of the organ transplant unit in transforming the family's wishes and hopes into the very best for young people whose lives have been changed and saved," he stated.

Investigation and Legacy

The cause of the accident remains under investigation by police in Hà Giang Province. The Hà Giang Loop is a popular 350-400km motorbike adventure route, typically taking three to four days to complete, passing through scenic areas like the Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark.

Vietnam's Minister of Health, Đào Hồng Lan, wrote a letter to Orla's family, expressing heartfelt gratitude for their decision. "This profound sacrifice will always be honoured and remembered. Your daughter's legacy will continue to live on through those who have received her organs and in the hearts of the Vietnamese people," the minister wrote.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said, "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Orla Wates, following her tragic death in Vietnam. We are in touch with the local authorities and our consular staff are doing all they can to support Orla’s family at this hugely difficult time."
