While pension credit recipients automatically qualify for these payments, households receiving other forms of government support may also be eligible under certain conditions. Morgan Vine, director of policy and influencing at Independent Age, expressed concern about energy affordability among older populations: "With more than half of older people on low incomes across England and Wales regularly expressing worry about meeting heating bill costs, it is absolutely crucial that vital support like cold weather payments reaches those who need it most."
Age UK has launched its 'crisis hiding in plain sight' campaign to encourage older individuals with limited incomes to investigate potential pension credit eligibility. The charity reports that many eligible older people miss out on financial support due to assumptions about ineligibility or apprehension about application processes.
Substantial Unclaimed Support Identified
Caroline Abrahams, charity director at Age UK, highlighted the compounding challenges facing older households: "During this prolonged cold snap, maintaining warmth and wellbeing at home becomes critically important for older individuals. Significant increases in energy, food, and housing costs have substantially impacted living standards over recent years."
Abrahams continued: "We continue to hear distressing accounts of older people implementing drastic measures to manage daily expenses. For those primarily dependent on state pension income, pension credit can create meaningful financial improvement. We strongly urge anyone reducing essential expenditures or carefully monitoring budgets to contact Age UK to explore available assistance."
The charity revealed that during the previous year, their national advice line assisted 6,006 older individuals with benefit assessments and applications, identifying more than £36 million in unclaimed support that eligible recipients could access.
