Singer Diana Vickers has announced she has been diagnosed with pelvic congestion syndrome after enduring four years of unexplained and debilitating pain. The 34-year-old former X Factor star shared the news in a candid Instagram video, expressing relief at finally having an answer after years of uncertainty.
A Long-Awaited Diagnosis
Vickers explained that she had suffered from pain in her lower back, legs, and pelvis, along with severe bloating. Despite numerous scans and blood tests, doctors were initially unable to identify the cause. She was told it could be endometriosis or irritable bowel syndrome, but a recent laparoscopy revealed the true culprit: pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS).
Pelvic congestion syndrome occurs when veins in the pelvis become enlarged and fail to function properly, causing blood to pool and leading to chronic pain. Vickers described the condition as extremely painful, noting that the veins wrap and twist around the ovaries.
Relief and Advocacy
Vickers expressed immense relief at finally having a diagnosis, saying she felt like she was "going absolutely mad" for years. She hopes that by sharing her story, she can raise awareness and help other women who are experiencing mysterious chronic pain. "There is a community of women out there who have pain and don't know what it is, and it can be so lonely," she said.
She also highlighted the lack of research and funding into women's health, calling it "infuriating" given that women make up half the population. Vickers is awaiting a full report but feels fortunate to have access to the NHS.
Recent Ordeal
The health update comes after Vickers shared a distressing incident in January when she was spat on by a stranger while filming an Instagram video. She was recounting a positive encounter with a woman who helped her cross the road when a passerby shouted abuse and spat at her. The singer later described the incident as part of a series of unfortunate events that included a wrong bagel order and receiving an unsolicited explicit image.
Despite the setback, Vickers remains determined to use her platform to discuss important issues, including women's health and personal safety.
