Daniel Neeson Shares Health Update After Heart Surgery
Daniel Neeson, the 29-year-old son of acclaimed actor Liam Neeson, has publicly disclosed that he recently underwent surgery to address a rare congenital heart defect. In a detailed Instagram post shared on Wednesday, the tequila brand founder opened up about his diagnosis and subsequent medical intervention, providing a candid look into his personal health battle.
Diagnosis and Medical Journey
Daniel explained that he was born with Bicuspid Aortic Valve (BAV), a condition where the aortic valve has two leaflets instead of the normal three. This defect affects approximately 2% of the population and often remains asymptomatic for years. He had been monitoring his condition with biannual cardiology checkups throughout his life, but recently began experiencing severe left ventricle dilation and aortic enlargement, necessitating surgical intervention.
"I knew it was heading toward medical intervention," Daniel wrote. "Some people with BAV are operated on later in life, but I drew the early-bird straw." He emphasized the importance of proactive health management, stating, "Nothing is more empowering than understanding your health, staying on top of your game, and planning ahead. Health is about being proactive, not reactive."
Surgery and Recovery Process
Daniel underwent the procedure at Weill Cornell / NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital under the care of Dr. Leonard Girardi and his medical team. He shared snaps and videos from his hospital stay, documenting moments from his recovery, including learning to walk again and the heartwarming instance when he was discharged to go home.
In his post, Daniel reflected on the emotional and psychological aspects of facing such a significant health challenge. "This required surrender. Presence. Letting go. Trusting world-class surgeons and unbelievable nurses," he expressed. "Overcoming this wasn’t about being fearless. It was about leaning into the healing energy and being as present as possible. I looked at this operation as a ceremony, not a procedure."
Support System and Personal Life
Daniel paid a heartfelt tribute to his fiancée, Natalie Ackerman, whom he described as his "rock" throughout the ordeal. The couple, who have been together for eight years since meeting at Tulane University, got engaged in September during a romantic boat trip on the Hudson River. They celebrated their engagement with friends at an Irish pub in Manhattan, enjoying custom cocktails from Daniel's tequila brand, De Nada Tequila.
He also expressed gratitude to his family, including his father Liam Neeson and his brother Micheál Richardson. Daniel's mother, actress Natasha Richardson, tragically passed away in 2009 following a skiing accident. In a previous tribute, Daniel shared fond memories of her, noting her influence on his life and career.
Understanding Bicuspid Aortic Valve
BAV is the most common congenital heart defect, typically developing when two of the aortic valve's three flaps fuse during fetal development. While it can lead to heart failure over time, symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, and lightheadedness may not appear until adulthood, often in middle age. Daniel urged his followers to prioritize heart health, advising, "Everyone should have their hearts checked by a cardiologist, even if they don’t have any known defects."
He concluded his message with a note of optimism and resilience: "The recovery trail is beautiful, patient, and rewarding. Always advocate for yourself and listen to your body. Most importantly, surrender to the present moment. Don’t live in fear. The universe has your back when you learn to dance with it."
