Liverpool Woman's Wedding Dreams Shattered by Lymphoma Diagnosis
Keira Morrison, a 30-year-old from Liverpool, had envisioned a summer wedding as the start of her "happily ever after" with partner Liam Bridgeman. Instead, she and her family are now bracing for the worst following a devastating lymphoma diagnosis, a form of blood cancer, received on February 10.
Symptoms Ignored for Over a Year
Keira first sought medical attention more than a year ago after discovering a lump on her neck and experiencing leg pain. She also noticed that consuming alcohol caused her face to swell and turn red. Initially, her symptoms were dismissed as high blood pressure or other minor issues. By Christmas, she had developed two lumps on her neck and felt increasingly unwell, prompting multiple doctor visits.
It was only after seeing a different physician that she was placed on a two-week urgent pathway, bypassing a scheduled March scan. She was referred to a head and neck specialist at Aintree Hospital, where an MRI, biopsy, and ultrasound revealed the grim reality. The specialist identified numerous lumps, confirming lymphoma and indicating the need for a PET scan to determine the cancer's stage.
Family's Heartbreaking Struggle
Keira has been with Liam for seven years and is a stepmother to his children, Miley, 15, and Liam, 10, whose biological mother passed away in 2017. The family, described as close-knit, has had to break the difficult news to the children, who already endured the loss of one mother. Keira expressed the emotional toll, stating, "It was really hard because they lost a mum at a young age and now they see me as their mum so going through that and then now being told they might lose another mum is heartbreaking."
Her health has rapidly declined, with Keira losing two stone in just four weeks and sleeping up to 20 hours daily due to stomach and leg pain. Remarkably, she credits her dog, Arlo, for alerting her to the neck lumps through persistent sniffing, a detail she might have otherwise overlooked.
Community Support and Awareness Efforts
Despite her illness, Keira has remained active in her community. Last Christmas, while feeling severely unwell, she helped deliver over 30 roast dinners to families in need. Liam praised her selflessness, noting, "That's just the type of person she is and I think the whole of Liverpool will get behind her because she's just got a heart of gold who'd do anything for anyone."
The couple, who have over 30,000 TikTok followers from their charitable efforts, are now using social media to share Keira's journey. She aims to raise awareness about lymphoma symptoms, hoping to prevent others from similar delays in diagnosis. Keira explained, "If I can help others by raising awareness and if someone comes to me and tells me they've been diagnosed because of my video I know that I possibly could have saved someone from going through what I've gone through."
Friend Bekah Smith, 36, from Kirkby, called Keira "one of Liverpool's angels," highlighting her past fundraising efforts, including a skydive for a child's recovery. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Keira during this challenging time, as the family prepares for an uncertain future while clinging to hope.
