Scottish Charity to Install Paediatric Operating Theatres in West Bank Amid Surging Demand
The Scottish humanitarian organisation Kids Operating Room has announced a significant initiative to establish three dedicated paediatric operating theatres within existing hospitals across the West Bank. This project aims to address a critical and growing need for children's surgical services in the Palestinian territory.
Targeting Key Locations to Meet Healthcare Needs
The charity has committed to installing these specialised medical facilities in hospitals located in Bethlehem, Hebron, and Jericho. Medical professionals in the region have reported that the current hospital infrastructure is increasingly overwhelmed by the rising demand for paediatric surgical procedures, creating urgent gaps in healthcare provision for children.
The first of these new operating theatres will be constructed at Al-Ahli Hospital in Hebron, with staff from Kids Operating Room having already conducted site visits to assess logistical requirements and ensure optimal functionality. The charity is launching a fundraising appeal to raise £320,000 to support the establishment of this vital facility.
A Permanent Solution for Lasting Impact
David Cunningham, Chief Executive of Kids Operating Room, emphasised the long-term vision behind the project. "Safe surgery is not a temporary requirement, it is a permanent part of a functioning health system," he stated. "Children across the West Bank face significant barriers to accessing safe surgery and these operating rooms are designed to international clinical standards and built to serve communities for decades. These facilities represent a permanent step forward for children's healthcare across the West Bank."
Cunningham further explained that the theatres will provide hospitals with the specialist infrastructure necessary to treat children safely and closer to their homes, fundamentally transforming paediatric care accessibility in the region.
Addressing Overwhelming Demand and Reducing Patient Wait Times
Dr. Yousef Takrouri, General Director of Al-Ahli Hospital, highlighted the pressing challenges faced by healthcare providers. "Over the past few years, the demand for children's surgery in the West Bank has grown far beyond what our hospital can manage," he said. "We have skilled staff and committed teams, but we simply do not have enough dedicated space to treat children safely. As a result, too many children are waiting in pain for operations that could and should be done much sooner."
Dr. Takrouri expressed confidence that the collaboration with Kids Operating Room will deliver the necessary facilities to provide proper care for children, ensuring benefits not only immediately but for many years into the future.
Leveraging Experience from Global Humanitarian Efforts
Kids Operating Room operates from a hub in Dundee, where it assembles medical equipment specifically for paediatric facilities in countries experiencing humanitarian crises. The charity recently demonstrated its capability by installing six operating theatres in Ukraine, which feature solar energy capabilities to maintain functionality during power blackouts.
This West Bank project continues the charity's mission to build sustainable, high-standard surgical infrastructure for children in regions where healthcare systems are under strain, aiming to create lasting improvements in medical outcomes and quality of life for young patients.
