Teddi Mellencamp Reflects on One-Year Anniversary of Stage 4 Cancer Diagnosis
Reality television personality Teddi Mellencamp has marked a significant milestone in her health journey, commemorating one year since her diagnosis with stage 4 cancer. The 44-year-old star, recently unveiled as a performer on The Masked Singer, took to Instagram on Monday to share a poignant reflection on her ongoing battle.
A Sudden and Serious Diagnosis
In her emotional post to her 1.2 million followers, Mellencamp recounted the rapid onset of her condition. "A year ago today I went into the ER thinking I had migraines and within 24 hours was having surgery on the plum-sized stage 4 tumors on my brain," she wrote. The former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star accompanied her message with a stark photograph showing her lying in a hospital bed with small medical devices attached to her head.
Mixed Emotions and Profound Gratitude
Despite having announced that her cancer is currently undetectable, Mellencamp expressed complex feelings about the anniversary. "I have a lot of anxiety surrounding today but also a lot of gratitude," she shared. Her gratitude extended to multiple areas of her support system, including the medical professionals who treated her, her family and friends who provided emotional backing, and the outpouring of love from fans and followers.
She concluded her caption with crucial advice for others: "Trust your instincts. Get checked." This message underscores the importance of proactive health monitoring, particularly given her own experience of initially dismissing symptoms as migraines.
Support from Friends and Ongoing Treatment
Fellow reality star Kyle Richards responded with heartfelt support in the comments, writing: "I can’t believe it’s been a year! You’re so strong Ted. Even the days you feel like you aren’t. You’re an inspiration to SO many. Love you!"
Mellencamp also used Instagram Stories to document her continuing treatment, sharing an image of her wrist wrapped in a red bandage with the caption "immunotherapy day." This visual reminder highlights that her journey continues despite the positive news of undetectable cancer.
The Physical and Mental Toll of Treatment
In late January, Mellencamp provided fans with an update on her Two T's in a Pod podcast with co-host Tamra Judge, revealing that she has begun focusing on her mental health alongside her physical recovery. "I started doing therapy, and it's taken its toll on me," she admitted. The star described ongoing physical challenges, including difficulty with movement and touch sensitivity, and expressed frustration at being slower than before her diagnosis.
Her brain cancer resulted from melanoma that metastasized in 2022, and she confessed to Judge that her "biggest fear is that the cancer is going to come back." This anxiety has impacted her daily life, with Mellencamp noting she hasn't taken Ubers alone and doesn't feel fully self-sufficient.
Clarifying Her Current Health Status
Last month, Mellencamp clarified an important distinction about her condition on her podcast. "There's still no trace of cancer. But I'm still considered stage four and I'm still on immunotherapy, so essentially nothing's changed other than I still don't feel great," she explained. She expressed disappointment that she hasn't experienced the improvement in wellbeing she had hoped for by this point.
The effects of her brain tumors were present for approximately six months before she sought medical attention. She had been suffering from migraines but continued to push through the pain while dealing with other life challenges, as she revealed in March on her podcast.
Personal Challenges Amid Health Crisis
Mellencamp's health emergency occurred just three months after she announced her separation from husband Edwin Arroyave in late 2024. The former couple shares three children: daughters Slate, 13, and Dove, 6, and son Cruz, 11. Mellencamp is also stepmother to Arroyave's 17-year-old daughter Isabella from a previous relationship.
Throughout her treatment and recovery, the mother of three has maintained transparency with her followers, sharing each step of her journey online. Her openness about both the medical and emotional aspects of her experience has provided a candid look at life with a serious cancer diagnosis.
