TikTok Star's Tummy Tuck Tragedy: Surgeon Speaks Out After Brain Death

The plastic surgeon who performed a tummy tuck on a TikTok star before she suffered catastrophic medical complications, allegedly resulting in brain death, has publicly expressed his devastation. Rachel Tussey, a 47-year-old mother of three from Ohio, had documented her cosmetic surgery journey with over 25,000 followers on TikTok, posting optimistic videos in the days leading up to her procedure on February 25.

A Routine Procedure Turns Into a Nightmare

According to her husband, Jeremy Tussey, what was supposed to be a routine cosmetic operation quickly descended into horror. The surgery, performed by Dr. Shahryar Tork, a double board-certified plastic surgeon based in Cincinnati, Ohio, initially appeared successful. However, shortly after the procedure, Rachel Tussey experienced a severe medical crisis that left her with a permanent anoxic brain injury.

Initial reports suggested Rachel had died, but TMZ confirmed she remained alive as of Wednesday, though she had been moved to hospice care after life support measures were discontinued. The family faced the heartbreaking decision to remove her from life support days after the incident.

Surgeon's Statement and Family's Grief

Dr. Tork released a statement to TMZ expressing his profound sorrow. 'I am heartbroken for Rachel Tussey and her family. My thoughts remain with her loved ones during this devastating time,' he said. 'Like them, I am struggling to understand how this could have occurred.'

The surgeon maintained that the surgery itself was completed without complications. 'Rachel’s surgery was completed successfully and without complications,' Tork stated. 'When I last saw her in the recovery room as she prepared for her planned overnight stay, she was awake and in excellent condition with her husband by her side.' He declined to comment further, citing patient privacy laws and respect for the family.

Legal Investigation and Husband's Account

Bernard Layne III, a personal injury attorney representing the Tussey family, confirmed that Rachel suffered a permanent brain injury from which she will never recover. 'I have been retained to represent the Tussey family and to conduct a full and thorough investigation surrounding the facts and circumstances of this tragedy,' Layne said. The family has not yet filed a lawsuit but is focusing on support during their grief.

In an emotional TikTok video posted on March 3, Jeremy Tussey recounted the terrifying moments after the surgery. He was waiting in the recovery area when he received a call to return to the room around 5:45 p.m. After briefly speaking with Dr. Tork, who reassured him the operation had gone well, Jeremy heard his wife calling for him.

Jeremy described noticing something was wrong when Rachel's face changed color and she stopped responding. Medical staff began CPR, but Jeremy felt there was 'no sense of urgency.' Eventually, emergency services were called, and Rachel was transported to TriHealth Bethesda North Hospital, where she was placed on life support.

Medical Details and Family Legacy

Doctors informed Jeremy that his wife had gone more than six minutes without oxygen, leading to brain death. According to the Cleveland Clinic, brain death is an irreversible state where the brain is permanently damaged, often due to oxygen deprivation. Individuals in this condition cannot breathe on their own and are considered legally dead once diagnosed.

A GoFundMe page established for the family describes Rachel as a vibrant, adventurous woman who deeply cherished her family and community. 'Rachel was truly full of life. She loved adventure, cherished her family deeply, and lived as an example of what community and compassion should look like,' the page reads. She leaves behind her husband Jeremy and their three children: Tristan, Alec, and Livi.

Jeremy Tussey remains determined to uncover how the tragedy unfolded. 'To me, it looks like incompetence. Somebody dropped the ball here,' he said. The family continues to mourn while their attorney investigates the circumstances surrounding this devastating loss.
