Twin sisters Ellen and Laura Goodwin have bravely opened up about the devastating loss of both their parents to cancer within a nine-month span from 2021 to 2022. Ellen, now 29, and her twin sister Laura took on intensive caring roles during their parents' illnesses, a journey they describe as profoundly challenging yet supported by the compassionate care of Marie Curie's home care team.
A Family's Heartbreaking Journey
Their father, Ralph Goodwin, was diagnosed with incurable neuroendocrine cancer in December 2019. A landscape gardener who cherished the outdoors, Ralph was remembered by Ellen as a kind, funny, and beloved man. He underwent immunotherapy and chemotherapy, which helped prolong his life for several months after diagnosis.
In a cruel twist, just over a year later in January 2021, their mother Jeannette was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. This meant both parents were undergoing chemotherapy simultaneously, a period Ellen described as particularly tough, exacerbated by the isolating effects of Covid lockdowns.
The Final Months and Lasting Memories
Jeannette, a hairdresser and her daughters' best friend, declined rapidly. The family managed one last holiday together in August 2021, a cherished memory before Jeannette's health deteriorated further. She required a stent to aid swallowing and was later admitted to a hospice, passing away in October 2021 at age 60.
After Jeannette's death, Ralph's condition worsened from January 2022. He faced multiple trips to A&E before being admitted to Lincoln County Hospital in June 2022. Upon discharge, Ellen and Laura cared for him at home with crucial support from Marie Curie's Urgent Hospice Care at Home team.
The Role of Marie Curie in Easing the Burden
Ellen emphasised how Marie Curie's assistance made an overwhelming situation more manageable. "They provided a listening ear and explanations for what was going on, as well as hands-on care support when we needed it the most," she said. This support was especially vital as the sisters, in their mid-twenties, navigated personal care duties they never anticipated.
Caring for their father at home was particularly difficult, as Ellen noted: "It was hard to see him like that, to watch him pass away. He was such a proud man and would have never wanted us to do that for him." Ralph passed away in July 2022 at age 61, after a two-and-a-half-year battle with neuroendocrine cancer.
Finding Solace and Giving Back
In the aftermath, Ellen and Laura continued to receive support from Marie Curie, family, and friends. Ellen turned to running as an escape and has since engaged in fundraising for Marie Curie, including completing the Dublin marathon in October. "It's been a good focus for me, to have a goal and give back for everything they did," she shared.
This story highlights the critical importance of hospice and bereavement support services for young adults facing terminal illness in their families. Marie Curie's ongoing assistance underscores how such organisations provide not only medical care but also emotional guidance during life's most trying times.
