Strictly Come Dancing professional Amy Dowden has returned home following her second mastectomy, just in time to watch the weekend's show from her sofa surrounded by family and friends.
Recovery at Home with Strictly as Medicine
The 35-year-old dancer, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2023, underwent the procedure earlier this week. She shared an update with her followers from her home, pictured in her pyjamas with a lymphatic drain still attached, enjoying a cup of tea.
"Home, resting up, still got my drain in but rrrrrready for the best entertainment and medicine there is for me," Amy captioned a heartfelt Instagram post. She added, "Good luck everyone. Cheering you all on from home! Lots of luck and love xxxxx."
A Long and Courageous Health Battle
This latest surgery marks another step in Amy's challenging health journey. Since her initial diagnosis, she has already endured a first mastectomy and chemotherapy. Her treatment path took a dangerous turn when she developed a life-threatening case of sepsis.
In a significant milestone, Amy announced in February 2024 that there was no evidence of cancer left in her body. However, she clarified that she would not be considered in the clear for five years as she continues hormone therapy. The decision for this second mastectomy was described as a preventative measure following a consultation with her medical team, and not due to a new cancer diagnosis.
Support from the Strictly Family and Beyond
Amy's post was quickly flooded with messages of support, including a comment from Strictly host Claudia Winkleman, who responded with three red heart emojis.
Earlier in the week, Amy had posted from her hospital bed after the operation, watching the Celebrity Traitors final with her husband, Ben, and other family members by her side. She confirmed then that the "surgery went well" and that she was focusing on rest.
The professional dancer has been open about her desire to represent the cancer community. Last month, she expressed disappointment after being the first contestant voted off the current Strictly series with partner Thomas Skinner, saying she felt she had "let down" fellow cancer survivors by not progressing further in the competition.
Amy remains optimistic about her return to the dancefloor, stating, "Once I have healed I look forward to rejoining my Strictly family."
