Public to Watch Vets at ZSL's New £20M Wildlife Health Centre
ZSL's Wildlife Health Centre Opens to Public Viewing

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) has announced plans for a new £20 million wildlife health centre, which will include the UK's first veterinary hospital viewing gallery for visitors. The facility, marking ZSL's 200th anniversary, will allow the public to observe procedures such as penguin health checks, frog X-rays, and porpoise post-mortems.

State-of-the-Art Facility

The centre, located at ZSL's UK headquarters in Regent's Park, London, will deliver veterinary care for zoo animals, monitor emerging diseases in wildlife, and support conservation efforts. It will also provide disease surveillance, including pre-release health checks for hazel dormice before reintroduction projects. The project is made possible by an anonymous donation, the largest in ZSL's 200-year history.

Public Engagement and Transparency

Visitors to London Zoo will be able to watch veterinary care in action, such as X-raying mountain chicken frogs, critically endangered amphibians affected by chytrid fungus. The gallery will also showcase scientific research, including autopsies on porpoises and dolphins stranded along UK coasts. ZSL aims to inspire careers in wildlife health and conservation through this transparent approach.

Expanding Veterinary Education

The centre will expand postgraduate and field-based training for wildlife vets and conservation scientists, with audio-visual equipment enabling remote teaching globally. Dr. Amanda Guthrie, ZSL's head of wildlife health services, described it as a "state-of-the-art facility" with potential for new technology like a CT scanner.

Kathryn England, ZSL chief executive, highlighted the charity's evolution from studying wildlife to fighting for its survival. The centre embodies the "one health" approach, recognizing the interconnectedness of animal, human, and ecosystem health.
