Council Tax Calculator 2026: How Much Will Bills Rise and What Band Is My House?

A clear majority of households across the country will see their council tax bills increase by 4.99% from April 1, 2026. This rise represents the maximum amount local authorities can impose without triggering a referendum, as many cash-strapped councils grapple with funding essential services.

Understanding the Council Tax Hike

In recent days, council tax letters have begun arriving on doormats nationwide, informing residents of the upcoming changes. Most local authorities are opting for the full 4.99% increase, citing the need to support services such as bin collections, libraries, and leisure centres amidst a challenging financial landscape.

However, some councils have received special government permission to exceed this limit. For instance, Reform-controlled Worcestershire County Council, along with Labour-led Trafford and Warrington, as well as North Somerset and Shropshire, are planning hikes ranging from 6.74% to nearly 9%. These exceptions highlight the varied pressures facing different regions.

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government commented: "Councils are responsible for their own tax levels and we are clear they should keep taxes on working people as low as possible. We have also made £78 billion available for their finances next year, with the majority of money unringfenced so local leaders can decide for themselves how best to spend on their local priorities."

How to Check Your Council Tax Band

Houses are categorised into bands from A to H based on their value as of April 1, 1991. Band D is intended to represent the average home, but in areas like poorer parts of northern England, most properties fall into Band A. To find your band, you can check online resources or refer to last year's bill.

Discounts and Eligibility

Several groups may qualify for council tax discounts or exemptions:

  • Full-time students: 100% off
  • Armed Forces in Forces accommodation: 100% off
  • People in care homes or hospitals: 100% off
  • Single occupants: 25% off
  • Apprentices, student nurses, monks, nuns, and carers: up to 50% off

Note that mixed households might still be liable for the full rate. Eligibility can be verified through official channels.
