Jane Fonda's Frustration Over Oscars Tribute to Robert Redford
Hollywood icon Jane Fonda voiced her disappointment following the Oscars ceremony on Sunday, where Barbara Streisand paid tribute to the late actor Robert Redford. Fonda, who starred in four films with Redford, felt overlooked by the Academy's choice of Streisand for the honor.
Oscars Tribute Sparks Controversy
During the Oscars, Barbara Streisand delivered an emotional speech honoring Robert Redford, who passed away last year at age 89. Streisand, who co-starred with Redford in the 1973 film The Way We Were, praised his acting and character. However, Jane Fonda, 88, was miffed that she wasn't selected to give the tribute, given her extensive history with Redford.
"She only made one movie with him. I made four. I have more to say," Fonda remarked after the event, raising eyebrows among fans and industry insiders. She expressed her frustration in interviews, questioning why Streisand was chosen over her.
Fonda's Regret About Working with Redford
Speaking on the Ellen DeGeneres show, Jane Fonda revealed her one regret about collaborating with Robert Redford. She lamented the brevity of their sex scene in their final film together, the 2017 Netflix hit Our Souls at Night.
"There is eventually a love scene. I'm happy with the love scene. I'm unhappy because it was so short!" she shared, adding humorously, "I've been in bed with him a lot." Fonda also confessed to the press at the 74th Venice Film Festival in 2017, "I live for sex scenes with [Redford]."
Reflections on Redford's Legacy
When asked about her memories of working with Robert Redford, Fonda fondly recalled her admiration for him. "He was the most gorgeous human being and such great values. And he did a lot for movies, he really changed movies, lifted up independent movies," she said, highlighting his impact on the film industry.
Fonda and Redford's collaborations spanned decades, including films like The Chase (1966), Barefoot in the Park (1967), The Electric Horseman (1979), and Our Souls at Night (2017). In contrast, Streisand's only film with Redford was The Way We Were, for which she performed a passage from its Oscar-winning theme song during the tribute.
Streisand's Tribute and Fonda's Reaction
Barbara Streisand's speech at the Oscars praised Redford as a "brilliant, subtle actor" and credited him with having "real backbone on and off the screen." Despite this, Fonda's public comments at the Vanity Fair Oscar party underscored her belief that she had more to contribute to honoring her close friend.
The incident has sparked discussions among Hollywood enthusiasts about the selection process for such tributes and the dynamics between legendary stars. Fonda's candid remarks offer a glimpse into the personal and professional bonds that shape the entertainment world.
