Downton Abbey Creator Julian Fellowes Announces Retirement from House of Lords
While Downton Abbey reached its dramatic conclusion last year with the cinematic release of The Grand Finale, another significant curtain is now falling. I can exclusively reveal that the celebrated creator of the hit ITV period drama, Julian Fellowes, is bringing his political career to an end.
Peerage and Political Service
The Oscar-winning scriptwriter, 76, has formally submitted written notice that he will retire from the House of Lords next month. Fellowes was elevated to the peerage in 2011 by David Cameron's Coalition government, taking the title Lord Fellowes of West Stafford. This title references the Dorset area where he resides in a manor house with his wife, Emma Kitchener, 63, a former lady-in-waiting to Princess Michael of Kent. The couple have one adult son, Peregrine.
When approached for comment about his decision to step down, the typically amiable Fellowes declined to elaborate. 'I don't want to talk about it,' he stated simply.
Health Challenges Behind the Decision
The retirement decision appears closely linked to Fellowes's declining health. Last year, he disclosed to me that he had become largely confined to a wheelchair following the return of a serious medical condition.
'About 40 years ago, I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis, probably resulting from an early slipped disc,' Fellowes explained. 'I had an operation and, after quite a long convalescence, I was well again, dancing, riding and the rest.'
'Unluckily, a couple of years ago I was told the condition had returned and, after another operation, I was obliged to recognise that my powers of recovery at 75 were not quite what they had been at 35. Which, I suppose, is no great surprise.'
He added with characteristic grace: 'I am not entirely immobile, but I do have to remain sitting for most of the time. I don't consider myself unlucky in this. Other people have far worse to put up with.'
Entertainment Industry Updates
In other entertainment news, GB News presenter Ellie Costello has introduced a new canine co-star who is charming viewers. Her ten-week-old long hair miniature dachshund, Monty, made his Breakfast show debut last week and has barely left her side since.
'We took Monty to the GB News studio, and he was just causing chaos just before we went on air, but everybody loved him,' Costello revealed at a London event. 'And then he actually came on air with me and sat on my lap for about 20 minutes. He was so laid-back and chill. It's like he knew he was on air.'
With veteran presenter Eamonn Holmes, 66, currently on annual leave, viewers have been quick to embrace the new addition. 'All the viewers were messaging in, saying, 'Please can you replace Eamonn with the dog,'' Costello joked.
Royal Wedding Preparations
Meanwhile, royal wedding preparations are underway as Lady Marina Windsor celebrated her hen party on the Isle of Sheppey. The 33-year-old charity events manager, who is engaged to cyber security specialist Nico Macauley, wore a white dress and veil while enjoying Martini cocktails with friends.
Lady Marina, granddaughter of the Duke and late Duchess of Kent, expressed her excitement: 'My heart is bursting with love and gratitude for my magical hens and this spectacular weekend.'
Parenting Perspectives and Health Tips
In celebrity parenting news, top model David Gandy has voiced strong opinions about modern child-rearing approaches. The father of two daughters criticized what he termed 'soft parenting' as 'a massive problem.'
'I am probably a strict father in some ways, but there's a fine balance,' Gandy, 46, explained. 'Boys do need some authority – they need role models. I always say, 'Forget masculinity... it's about being a gentleman.''
Gandy also expressed concern about gender balance in children's literature, noting that his daughters receive feminist books. 'I have to explain to them, as well, about the men that have changed the world, and that men are making a difference,' he said. 'We can all be great.'
In health and fitness news, Ed Sheeran has revealed the simple dietary change behind his dramatic physical transformation. The Grammy winner, 35, who recently appeared on the cover of Men's Health showcasing a newly ripped physique, explained his approach.
'My life hack for it was just rice,' Sheeran said. 'I just eat a lot of rice now. I used to eat a lot of bread, a lot of pasta, and then I just stopped that and ate way more rice, and that seems to work for me.' The singer has reportedly lost 30 pounds since his heavier days.
Racing World Mourns
The racing community is mourning the loss of Miriam Francome, who has died at age 72. The former model turned horse trainer met her future husband, champion jump jockey John Francome, while working in the industry. They married in 1976, the same year he won the first of his seven champion titles.
Miriam later worked as a presenter with the Racing Channel in the 1990s and for BBC racing. Trainer Charlie Brooks, who had a 12-year relationship with Miriam after her divorce from Francome, paid tribute: 'She was the kindest and most generous person you could ever meet.'
