Spain's Picos de Europa Crowned World's Most Beautiful Destination
In a recent global ranking by Time Out, the Picos de Europa mountain range in Spain has been declared the most beautiful place on Earth. This stunning limestone range, soaring to heights of 2,650 metres, offers breathtaking landscapes and is conveniently accessible from the UK with flights starting at a mere £15 one-way.
A Hiker's Paradise with Rugged Trails
Located just over 12 miles from the coastline, the Picos de Europa features steep ascents and deep gorges, making it a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The highlight for many adventurers is the Cares Trail, a 13-mile route that winds through dramatic canyons, craggy peaks, and cascading waterfalls. While not suitable for beginners due to its length, the trail's gentle inclines make it achievable for experienced walkers seeking a challenging yet rewarding experience.
For those preferring a less strenuous approach, the Fuente Dé cable car provides a swift ascent up the mountainside, allowing visitors to relax and soak in the verdant views below. Once at the summit, additional hiking trails await, including demanding climbs that offer spectacular panoramic vistas of the surrounding national park.
Rich Biodiversity and Cultural Charm
The mountains are part of the broader Picos de Europa National Park, home to the glistening blue Lakes of Covadonga. These lakes, encircled by peaks and lush vegetation, evoke landscapes reminiscent of Scotland or the Lake District, adding to the region's allure. The protected park is teeming with wildlife, including brown bears, wolves, vultures, eagles, mountain goats, and vibrant butterflies, thriving amidst the limestone terrain.
At the foot of the mountains, visitors can explore charming towns like medieval Potes, with its centuries-old stone and half-timbered buildings, cobbled streets, and rustic allure. The town's centrepiece, the 15th-century Torre del Infantado, now serves as a museum with a rooftop terrace offering sweeping views. Another favoured spot is Arenas de Cabrales, renowned for producing Cabrales cheese and boasting a plethora of acclaimed restaurants serving hearty Northern Spanish cuisine, such as bean stews and grilled meats with locally sourced ingredients.
Affordable Access from the UK
The Picos de Europa is just under two hours from Santander Airport, serviced by airlines including Ryanair. Year-round flights operate from Edinburgh and London-Stansted, with seasonal options from Birmingham and Manchester. With one-way fares starting at £15 and a flight duration of approximately two hours, this destination offers an affordable escape for British travellers seeking natural beauty and adventure.
