Keri Russell Celebrates 50 with Natural Wellness Philosophy
As actress Keri Russell marks her milestone 50th birthday, the star of Netflix's political drama The Diplomat has never appeared more radiant. The American actress, who has previously spoken candidly about Hollywood's demanding beauty standards and plastic surgery trends, attributes her youthful appearance to a balanced approach to wellness rather than extreme regimens.
A Physical Person's Fitness Regimen
Describing herself as a 'physical person', the mother-of-three maintains her fitness through varied activities that bring her joy. 'I'm happiest when I work out,' Russell told Shape magazine. 'You need that hit - where everything is moving and pumping and you instantly feel positive. I feel my absolute best - my sexiest - after a good workout.'
Her current routine includes challenging bike rides and spontaneous dance sessions in her living room to loud music. 'Right now, that's usually a tough bike ride. Or I'll dance around in my room to loud music and do moves I remember from a pregnancy video I had,' she explained. This active lifestyle extends to her professional life too - while filming The Diplomat in London, Russell explored the city by bicycle, combining exercise with sightseeing.
Balanced Diet Without Deprivation
Russell approaches nutrition with similar balance, describing herself as 'generally a pretty healthy eater' while allowing for indulgences. She follows the simple ritual of hot water with lemon before bed and upon waking, but doesn't deny herself treats. During filming of The Americans with partner Matthew Rhys, she admits to consuming 'so many doughnuts'.
Family traditions remain important too - Sundays typically feature a substantial roast chicken dinner with vegetables and Yorkshire puddings, which Russell calls a 'guilty pleasure'. 'When I see those people who look so great for their age, I'm like, 'Oh, I do want that. I do want to look like that at 60.' I'm just not ready to stick to a strict regimen. I still want to have fun a little longer. I'll still have the pasta Bolognese,' she revealed.
Holistic Wellness Beyond Exercise
Russell's approach extends beyond physical fitness to encompass broader wellness factors. She credits several elements for her overall health:
- Quality sleep
- Healthy intimate relationships
- Time spent with close female friends
- Solitary cycling sessions for mental clarity
Despite sharing children River and Willa with ex-husband Shane Deary and son Sam with partner Matthew Rhys, Russell maintains focus on these wellness routines that sustain her demanding career.
Challenging Hollywood Beauty Standards
Russell has become increasingly vocal about Hollywood's unrealistic beauty expectations. In October, she discussed feeling 'totally empathetic' with her Diplomat character Kate Wyler, whose makeup-free appearance frequently draws criticism from other characters.
'It's such a weird thing being a woman. Everyone has an opinion about the way you look, the way you dress, the way your hair is,' Russell told People magazine. 'It's something my girlfriends and I talk about all the time. Plastic surgery is having such a moment right now - men, women, 20-year-olds. I mean, it is around.'
The actress acknowledged the pressure created by seeing celebrities who 'look amazing' at 50 or 60, but finds satisfaction in portraying a character who challenges these norms. 'I like how cranky she is about it, and how she's always trying to fight people about it, and is rude about it. I love it. I find it delightful,' she said of her character's attitude toward appearance-focused criticism.
Career Evolution and Hair History
Russell's career has evolved significantly since her early days on The All New Mickey Mouse Club and her breakthrough role as Felicity Porter in the late-1990s television series Felicity. That role became particularly memorable when her character famously cut her iconic curly hair in 1999 - a decision that shocked fans but felt authentic to Russell.
'They were like, 'Would you do that?' I was like, 'Yeah.' Because the character wasn't known to be this beautiful person. She was this nerdy, kind of overly emotional college student,' Russell recalled. 'And I thought, Of course, every one of my friends cut their hair. They'd break up with a boy, and then they'd have this terrible haircut. So I thought it was perfect. But it was crazy. People were very upset by that haircut. Sorry.'
Now starring in and producing The Diplomat - her first producing credit - Russell plays US Ambassador Kate Wyler, who navigates international crises while managing a deteriorating marriage to her character's husband, played by Rufus Sewell. The series, created by former The West Wing and Homeland writer Deborah Cahn, was renewed for a fourth season in May 2025 and continues to stream on Netflix.
