Liza Minnelli Reveals Judy Garland's Fury During London Palladium Duet
Minnelli: Garland Demanded 'Get Her Off My F***ing Stage'

Liza Minnelli has made a startling revelation about a joint performance with her legendary mother, Judy Garland, claiming Garland furiously demanded she be taken off the stage during their 1964 show at the London Palladium. The 79-year-old actress and singer details this explosive moment in her forthcoming memoir, Kids, Wait Till You Hear This, which chronicles her rise to fame and her complex relationship with her mother, who died from an accidental overdose in 1969 at age 47.

The Infamous Night at the London Palladium

Minnelli, the daughter of stage director Vincente Minnelli, recalled that at age 18, she had the opportunity to perform alongside her mother at the prestigious London venue. In an excerpt obtained by People magazine, she described the rapid shift in Garland's demeanor as the night progressed.

"After my first song on opening night, I heard her shout, 'Yeah, baby! Go get 'em!'" Minnelli wrote. "After the second song, another 'Yeah!' but not quite as strong. By the third song, let's just say she was losing enthusiasm."

The situation escalated dramatically when Minnelli overheard her mother whispering to producer Harold Davison: "Harold, get her off my f****ing stage!" Despite this, Minnelli continued singing to wild applause as Garland fumed. She reflected on a profound realization: "I had begun the night as Mama's daughter. Now, I was onstage with Judy Garland."

A History of Performances and Parental Dynamics

The mother-daughter duo had performed together before this incident. In 1963, Minnelli appeared on The Judy Garland Show, where they delivered their famous duet of "Together (Wherever We Go)" and other numbers like "We Could Make Such Beautiful Music Together/The Best Is Yet to Come."

Minnelli has previously spoken about the challenges of growing up with famous parents. In a 2024 interview with Interview Magazine, she described her father as the "most glamorous" part of her childhood and her mother as the "most challenging."

"I bounced back and forth because they were divorced, but I loved them both so much," she explained. "My mother was fascinating because she knew so many fascinating people who would come over. And my father used to let me go to the set and watch him direct."

She noted that Garland had a stricter, more unpredictable parenting style, influenced by her mood, work pressures, and personal relationships. "Every kid goes through that," Minnelli added.

Caregiver Role and Lasting Impact

In her memoir, the Cabaret star also disclosed the heavy burden of being her mother's caregiver from a young age. Garland struggled with severe addictions to prescription drugs and alcohol, and Minnelli found herself taking on multiple roles to support her.

"At 13, I was my mother's caretaker — a nurse, doctor, pharmacologist, and psychiatrist rolled into one," she wrote. "I lost count of the times I called doctors to say she'd run out of pills. I'd say: 'I'm a kid! Please fill my mama's prescription!'"

This candid account sheds new light on the intense pressures and emotional turmoil within one of Hollywood's most iconic families, highlighting both the professional rivalry and deep personal bonds that defined their relationship.
