Renowned Northern Irish actor Liam Neeson has publicly articulated profound anxieties regarding the future trajectory of Hollywood, specifically fearing that the traditional cinematic experience is being increasingly sidelined by the dominance of streaming platforms. The 73-year-old screen legend, whose celebrated career includes an Academy Award nomination for Schindler's List and starring roles in films like Michael Collins, shared these concerns while promoting his latest thriller, Cold Storage.
Industry Transformation and Actor Apprehensions
In a candid interview with the Press Association, Neeson highlighted the rapid and unsettling changes sweeping through the movie business. He pointed directly to the consolidation of streaming services and frequent corporate acquisitions as key drivers of this shift. "The movie industry is changing, streaming services are merging, companies are being bought out," Neeson stated emphatically. "We're all very concerned about the state of Hollywood. What's going to happen to feature films?"
Reflections on a Challenging Profession
Reflecting on his nearly five-decade-long journey in acting, Neeson acknowledged the inherent volatility and rejection that defines the profession. Despite his own success, he expressed sympathy for fellow actors facing prolonged unemployment. "I've been very, very lucky," he admitted. "I have friends and acquaintances, actors, some of whom haven't worked for months and months. It's a profession filled with rejection. It really is."
He also recounted the often personal and discouraging criticism actors endure early in their careers, such as being told they are "too Irish" or need to alter their accent. "All this kind of criticism follows you throughout your career, certainly in the early days," Neeson recalled, reiterating his gratitude for his fortunate path.
Embracing New Talent and Collaborative Spirit
Despite his veteran status and recent box office success with the action-comedy The Naked Gun, Neeson expressed a strong desire to work with emerging directors and fresh talent. "I'd love the chance to work with up-and-coming directors," he said. "I may be a little out of touch, but there just seems to be incredible talent out there."
He particularly praised his Cold Storage co-stars, Joe Keery and Georgina Campbell, for their inspiring on-screen chemistry and professionalism. Neeson confessed to being largely unfamiliar with their prior work but was deeply impressed during filming. "They were just terrific to work with. They inspired me and gave me a sense of the pace my character should speak at," he explained.
Cold Storage: A High-Stakes Thriller
Directed by Jonny Campbell and written by David Koepp, Cold Storage is a suspenseful thriller centred on a dangerous parasitic fungus that escapes from an abandoned military base. Neeson portrays Robert Quinn, a seasoned bioterror operative, who teams up with two young storage facility employees, played by Keery and Campbell, to prevent a global catastrophe.
Neeson highlighted the complexity of his role, noting that most of his dialogue involved intricate bioterror-related physics and chemistry. However, he credited his co-stars for enhancing his performance through their dynamic interplay. "Their chemistry was terrific and inspired how I delivered my performance," he said.
Cold Storage is scheduled for release in UK cinemas this Friday, representing a traditional theatrical rollout amidst the very industry changes Neeson finds so concerning.
