The family of Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has made an extraordinary archaeological discovery during a private tour in the West Bank. Her three children unearthed ancient coins believed to be nearly 2,000 years old.
A Family Excursion Turns Historic
While visiting the Binyamin region, Governor Sanders, her husband, and their three children – Scarlett, George, and William – embarked on a guided tour of a cave near Na’ela. Accompanied by archaeologists, the family exploration took a stunning turn when the youngsters spotted something metallic in the earth.
The children excitedly called to their grandfather, Mike Huckabee, the US Ambassador to Israel, exclaiming, 'Grandpa, look what we found!' Their discovery consisted of five coins, which experts from the Yesha Council later identified as originating from the period of the Bar Kokhba Revolt, around 132 to 135 AD.
Significance of the Ancient Find
The coins were found near the historic site of Shilo. In a separate cave during the same tour, the Sanders family also discovered fragments of a jar dating from the second century. This adds significant context to the find, suggesting the area was in use during a pivotal era of Jewish history.
Governor Sanders described the moment as profoundly moving. 'Watching my kids uncover and hold coins buried for more than 2,000 years was unforgettable,' she told Fox News in an official statement. Ambassador Mike Huckabee echoed the sentiment, expressing awe at visiting a location that connects the ancient past with the present.
Family Ties and Diplomatic Links
The discovery occurred during a family trip to Israel in December, where the Christian governor also celebrated Christmas in Bethlehem. She shared images from the Church of the Nativity on social media, marking the festive occasion.
This personal visit followed an official trade mission Governor Sanders undertook to Israel and the United Arab Emirates in August, aimed at deepening Arkansas's economic bonds with Israel, which she praised as a hub for innovation. Ambassador Huckabee, stationed in Tel Aviv since June, has been a prominent figure during recent regional tensions, famously vowing to President Donald Trump that he would be 'the last to leave' his post.
The accidental discovery by the governor's children highlights how history can surface in the most unexpected ways, blending a family holiday with a tangible link to a ancient rebellion.
