Son of British Couple Trapped in Tehran Prison Seeks Trump's Aid After UK Government 'Let Down'

Joe Bennett, the son of a British couple imprisoned in Iran, is travelling to the United States to lobby former President Donald Trump for support, claiming his family has been profoundly let down by the British government. Lindsay and Craig Foreman, both 53 from East Sussex, were arrested in January 2025 while on a global motorcycle trip and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Dire Conditions and Government Inaction

The couple is currently held in Tehran's notorious Evin prison, which has been caught in the crossfire of US-Israeli bombardment. Mr Bennett revealed that British consular staff failed to inform his parents they were leaving Iran just one day before the conflict erupted, leaving him with a deep sense of abandonment. "My government has let me down," he told The Telegraph. "They are British citizens who appear to have been abandoned. They are in real and immediate danger."

According to Mr Bennett's accounts to The Independent, his parents face horrific conditions:

  • They have been separated and held in solitary confinement
  • Legal representation has been denied throughout their ordeal
  • A bomb exploded near the prison on the first day of war, shattering windows
  • Female prisoners reportedly dived under metal bunk beds during the attack

Appeal to Trump and US Intervention

Ahead of addressing the US Capitol this week during the Transatlantic Conference on Hostage-Taking and Arbitrary Detention, Mr Bennett disclosed that neither the British prime minister nor foreign secretary has responded to his letters or petitions. "Donald Trump is a father and he has a family. I am sure he loves them deeply. And that is the reason I appeal to him to help us get them out," he explained.

Mr Bennett, 31, emphasized the contrast in governmental approaches: "The US is actively bringing their hostages' names up in all high-level international discussions, and the UK should be doing this for my parents, too." His visit to Washington comes as the US ramps up strikes on Iran, with political figures like Hegseth boasting about "crushing the enemy" while promising the conflict won't repeat Iraq war patterns.

Collapsed Legal System and Ongoing Risks

The family spokesperson detailed how the legal process has effectively collapsed in Iran:

  1. The Revolutionary Courts that sentenced the couple have reportedly been targeted in recent airstrikes
  2. Their state-appointed lawyer has left the country
  3. There's no clarity on whether their appeal was successfully received before court systems shut down

A Foreign Office spokesperson told The Independent: "The welfare of British nationals detained in Iran is a priority for this government and continues to be during the current situation in the Middle East. Craig and Lindsay's sentences are completely appalling and totally unjustifiable, and we will continue to pursue this case relentlessly with the Iranian regime." They added that consular assistance continues to be provided to the couple and their family.
