Former US President Donald Trump has issued a severe warning, threatening to "massively blow up" Iran's strategically crucial South Pars Gas Field if Tehran continues its assaults on Qatar. This statement follows Trump's public condemnation of Israel for its initial attack on the same facility.
Trump's Social Media Declaration
In a post on Truth Social, Trump rebuked Israel for what he described as a violent lashing out at the South Pars Gas Field, a major Iranian asset. He emphasized that the United States had no prior knowledge of this Israeli strike and clarified that Qatar was not involved in any capacity.
Trump wrote, "Israel, out of anger for what has taken place in the Middle East, has violently lashed out at a major facility known as South Pars Gas Field in Iran. A relatively small section of the whole has been hit. The United States knew nothing about this particular attack, and the country of Qatar was in no way, shape, or form, involved with it, nor did it have any idea that it was going to happen."
Ultimatum to Iran
Trump's message escalated with a direct ultimatum to Iran. He stated that if Iran unjustifiably attacks Qatar's LNG gas facility again, the US would respond by destroying the entire South Pars Gas Field with unprecedented force.
He continued, "NO MORE ATTACKS WILL BE MADE BY ISRAEL pertaining to this extremely important and valuable South Pars Field unless Iran unwisely decides to attack a very innocent, in this case, Qatar - In which instance the United States of America, with or without the help or consent of Israel, will massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field at an amount of strength and power that Iran has never seen or witnessed before."
Trump expressed reluctance to authorize such destruction due to long-term implications for Iran but affirmed his readiness to act if necessary, concluding, "I do not want to authorize this level of violence and destruction because of the long term implications that it will have on the future of Iran, but if Qatar’s LNG is again attacked, I will not hesitate to do so. Thank you for your attention to this matter."
Background of Regional Tensions
This warning comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. Iranian missiles have recently struck multiple locations in Gulf countries, including an attack on Qatar's Ras Laffan gas facility, which Qatar's state energy company reported caused extensive damage. Qatar's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Majed Al Ansari, labeled the Israeli attack on South Pars as "reckless and irresponsible."
Additionally, explosions were reported in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with four people injured by shrapnel from intercepted missiles. These incidents occurred shortly after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned of targeting oil and gas facilities in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE in retaliation for Israeli strikes on South Pars.
Implications for Global Energy Markets
The South Pars Gas Field is the world's largest gas field, and any escalation in attacks could have significant repercussions for global energy supplies and prices. Trump's threat underscores the volatile nature of the current conflict and the potential for further destabilization in the region.
As the situation develops, international observers are closely monitoring for any signs of escalation or de-escalation, with concerns about the broader impact on Middle East stability and global economic factors.
