Zelensky Appeals for Trump and Starmer to Reconcile Amid Transatlantic Tensions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a heartfelt plea to US President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to "reload" their strained relationship as a transatlantic spat intensifies. The leader urged the two figures to convene and establish a "common position" following their public disagreements, which have centred on the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
Trump's Criticism and Starmer's Stance
President Trump has repeatedly targeted Sir Keir after the Prime Minister declined to provide enhanced assistance to US and Israeli military actions against Iran. Trump has disparaged Starmer as "no Winston Churchill" and accused him of committing a "big mistake" by failing to support America's operations. This criticism stems from Starmer's initial refusal to permit the use of British air bases for strikes on Iran and his subsequent resistance to Trump's requests for aid in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital sea channel now effectively blocked by Tehran.
Impact on Ukraine's War Effort
Zelensky expressed grave concerns about how the Iran crisis is affecting Ukraine's battle against Russian aggression. He warned that Ukraine faces a critical deficit of missiles, particularly Patriot systems supplied by the US, due to the diversion of resources to the Middle East. "For Putin, a long war in Iran is a plus," Zelensky stated, highlighting that it leads to the depletion of American reserves and air defence manufacturing capacity. He noted that while the US produces approximately 60-65 missiles monthly, over 800 were used on the first day of the Middle East conflict, underscoring the strain on supplies.
Zelensky's Diplomatic Efforts
During a meeting in Downing Street with Prime Minister Starmer and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Tuesday, Zelensky emphasised the need for unity. He suggested that Trump and Starmer could overcome their differences through direct dialogue, urging them to meet and mend their relationship. Zelensky also claimed that Trump is "not on any side" in the Ukraine-Russia war, alleging the US President aims to avoid irritating Vladimir Putin, unlike Europe, which has provoked the Russian leader.
Broader Implications and Responses
The Iran conflict has global repercussions, with around a fifth of global oil supplies typically passing through the Strait of Hormuz, leading to skyrocketing energy prices. In response, Trump has temporarily eased some restrictions on Russian oil to alleviate supply pressures. Meanwhile, Starmer reiterated that Putin must not benefit from the Iran war, whether through oil price fluctuations or sanctions relief. He stressed the importance of maintaining focus on Ukraine, stating, "We can't lose focus on what's going on in Ukraine and the need for our support."
Zelensky's appeal comes as peace negotiations between Ukraine, the US, and Russia are constantly postponed due to the Iran crisis, complicating efforts to end the conflict. His warnings highlight the interconnected nature of global conflicts and the urgent need for diplomatic cohesion among key allies.
