Bristol Schools Enter Precautionary Lockdown Following Speedwell Shooting

Schools in Bristol were plunged into a precautionary lockdown this afternoon after a shooting incident in the Speedwell area left a man with a potentially life-changing injury. Avon and Somerset Police confirmed they were called at 1.47pm to reports of a gun being fired at a car on Speedwell Road, prompting a major response including firearms officers and a National Police Air Service helicopter.

Manhunt Underway for Suspect on Electric Bike

An investigation is now underway to identify the perpetrator, who fled the scene on a black and grey electric bike in the direction of Soundwell. The suspect is described as a white male, aged in his late teens or early twenties, of slim build, and approximately 6ft tall. He was reportedly wearing a grey hoodie, black trousers, and a balaclava at the time of the incident.

Chief Inspector James Clements addressed public concerns, stating: “I know this incident will be incredibly concerning, however we are deploying significant resources as we work to locate the person responsible.” He added that the victim, a man in his 20s, has been taken to hospital with an injury that is not believed to be life-threatening but could have life-altering consequences. No other injuries have been reported.

School Lockdowns and Community Impact

Three local schools—Bristol Brunel Academy, Two Mile Hill Primary School, and Chester Park Infant and Junior schools—initiated lockdown procedures as a safety precaution. In communications to parents, Two Mile Hill Primary School emphasised that the safety and security of pupils and the wider community is our highest priority, despite the inconvenience close to the end of the school day.

Bristol Brunel Academy assured families that all staff and students were safe during the lockdown, which was later lifted as the situation stabilised. The schools had been advised by police to remain secured due to the ongoing incident in the local community.

Police Presence and Appeal for Information

A significant police presence remains in the area, with cordons established at Speedwell Road near the Wackum Inn pub and between Speedwell Road and Two Mile Hill. An air ambulance was also deployed to the scene, landing in a nearby park as the police helicopter continued to circle overhead.

Authorities are appealing for witnesses or anyone with footage or information related to the shooting to come forward. Individuals can contact police on 101 using reference number 5226089476 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Chief Inspector Clements concluded: “There is likely to be a significant police presence in the area over the coming days while our investigation continues. Neighbourhood officers will also be carrying out extra patrols.” This incident has heightened concerns in the community, with schools now resuming normal operations as the hunt for the gunman continues.
