Reckless Drink Driver Jailed for Over a Decade After Filming Fatal Crash

A drink driver who filmed himself speeding at 80mph in his BMW before crashing and killing his friend in the passenger seat has been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison. Mariusz Kosinski, 37, was driving on the wrong side of the road when he lost control, flipping his car onto its roof in a fatal incident that shocked witnesses.

Footage Captures Disturbing Moments Before and After Crash

Kosinski recorded himself driving 20mph above the speed limit on the A46 in Evesham, Worcestershire, at 5.30pm on July 27, 2024. The video shows him closely overtaking bikers and cars, drifting into the wrong side of the road, and screaming in Polish after realising his friend Pawel Czubacki, 40, was dead. He exclaimed, 'I killed the dude!' in a moment of horrifying realisation.

Shocked witnesses reported that his black BMW 330d had sped past 14 cars and two motorbikes before the crash. At the scene, police and witnesses smelled alcohol on him, and a breathalyser test revealed Kosinski had 80mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath – more than twice the legal limit of 35mcg. Further blood tests confirmed he was over the limit, registering 84 milligrams per 100 millilitres.

Court Hears Details of Dangerous Driving and Sentencing

Kosinski, from Evesham, was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving and jailed for ten-and-a-half years last week at Worcester Crown Court. Judge Nicholas Cartwright stated that Kosinski deliberately ignored road rules, showing a disregard for other road users while 'showing off'. The judge also banned Kosinski from driving for 13 years.

Other motorists heard loud screeching tyres and saw the BMW's wheels spinning on the Twyford Island roundabout before it hurtled onto the A46 Evesham Bypass. Kosinski continued down the centre of the road, attempting to overtake another car near Badsey Island, moments before losing control. His BMW went into a spin, flipped over, and landed on its roof on a grass verge. Despite emergency services' efforts, Mr Czubacki died at the scene.

Police and Dashcam Evidence Highlight Reckless Behaviour

Kosinski's mirror dashcam was used as evidence, capturing not only the reckless driving leading up to the crash but also his distraught reactions afterward. In the video, he did not respond to police questions about his name and age, closing his eyes as officers spoke to him. Detective Constable Danny Somner of West Mercia Police commented, 'We are pleased to get this conviction and sentencing for Kosinski today whose appalling driving resulted in the tragic death of his passenger and put many other motorists at risk of serious harm that day.'

He added, 'It would be easy to think that what happened was just a one-off lapse of judgment or moment of madness, however, the footage recovered from Kosinski's dashcam showed his usual driving was risky and dangerous, so it is right he is behind bars and has been handed a lengthy ban from the roads.' This case underscores the severe consequences of drink driving and dangerous behaviour on UK roads.
