Former NRL Player and Mother Charged with Assault Following AFL Match

Ex-NRL star Curtis Scott and his mother, Dianna Allen, have been formally charged with assaulting an 18-year-old man after an Australian Football League match last Saturday night. The incident occurred outside the Sydney Cricket Ground following the Sydney Swans versus Brisbane Lions game on March 14.

Arrest and Court Proceedings

Scott, aged 28, and Allen, aged 55, were arrested at Surry Hills police station on Tuesday morning. Scott spent the night in custody before appearing in a Sydney court on Wednesday, where he was granted conditional bail. His mother was released on police bail on Tuesday.

Police allege that the pair assaulted the teenager, who required hospital treatment for facial injuries. Scott faces charges of assault causing actual bodily harm, affray, and assaulting police. Allen has been charged with common assault and hindering or resisting a police officer in the execution of duty.

Separate Incident Involving Police Officer

In a separate alleged incident less than an hour later, Scott is accused of assaulting a senior constable in Sydney's Moore Park precinct. Police report that officers stopped a tram at Moore Park Light Rail Station to speak with Scott, but he allegedly assaulted the officer and fled the scene. The constable sustained minor injuries.

Legal Defence and Bail Conditions

Scott's lawyer, Paul McGirr, told the court that the alleged assault on the teenager was "not a random attack" and suggested there was more to the story involving Scott's mother. McGirr also stated that Scott had a "come to Jesus moment" while handcuffed in a jail cell, realizing he needs help.

The lawyer highlighted that Scott recently suffered a severe concussion during a Nines tournament in Las Vegas, which may require assessment for a possible brain injury. McGirr proposed that Scott could undergo full-time rehabilitation for drugs and alcohol issues.

Bail was not opposed by the police prosecutor, but conditions were requested to prevent Scott from contacting the 18-year-old victim or his mother. The court rejected the condition regarding Allen after McGirr opposed it. Scott's bail conditions include:

  • Living at his family home in Sydney's south
  • Following a 10pm to 6am curfew
  • Not attending the SCG
  • Being of good behaviour

Scott is due to return to court next month, while Allen is scheduled to face court on April 9.

Background of Curtis Scott

Curtis Scott was a highly touted junior rugby league star who made his NRL debut in 2016 with the Melbourne Storm, winning a premiership in 2017. He moved to the Canberra Raiders in 2020 but was sacked in 2021 after an assault charge brought the club into disrepute.

Since leaving the NRL, Scott has pursued a boxing career, remaining unbeaten in four heavyweight bouts, including victories against AFL legend Barry Hall and All Blacks great Liam Messam.

In 2022, Scott was convicted and fined for domestic violence offences against his former girlfriend, athlete Tay-Leiha Clark. He was found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault, and stalking or intimidation with intent to cause fear of physical harm.

Additionally, Scott is currently contesting allegations that he was drink-driving before leaving the scene of a crash in Sydney's south.
