A mother-of-three has been fatally shot by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis, reigniting nationwide protests and fierce debate over the agency's tactics just five years after the police killing of George Floyd in the same city.
A Fatal Encounter on a Residential Street
Renee Good, 37, was sitting in her Honda Pilot on January 7 when veteran ICE agent Jonathan Ross opened fire, shooting her three times. The incident occurred on a residential street as neighbours, including children being dropped at a nearby primary school, looked on.
Federal officials, including Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, claim the agents were acting in self-defence. They allege Ms Good attempted to ram the officers with her car, an act which the Trump administration has labelled "domestic terrorism". However, multiple video recordings of the event have circulated, leading to public scrutiny and conflicting accounts of the moments leading to the shooting.
Video Timeline: The 90-Second Confrontation
Footage shows the incident unfolded rapidly. At 9:35 am, Ms Good's car was stopped diagonally across the street. ICE agents, some wearing masks, approached the vehicle as bystanders shouted and whistled. Ms Good's partner was seen filming and speaking with an agent behind the car.
As two officers in an unmarked Nissan Titan arrived and ordered Ms Good to "get out of the car", she put her vehicle into reverse. Agent Ross, who had been behind the Honda, moved to the driver's side. As the car began to move forward again, Ross drew his firearm and fired through the front windshield. A second shot followed almost immediately.
Federal authorities state Ross was struck by the car, though he remained standing. A third shot was fired as the vehicle passed him. Three seconds after the first gunshot, Ms Good's car crashed into a parked vehicle. Bystanders, including a man identifying as a doctor, pleaded to help her, but agents refused, stating they had their own medics. First responders arrived over six minutes later, but Ms Good could not be saved.
Aftermath: Protests and Parallels to George Floyd
The shooting has triggered a wave of anti-ICE protests in hundreds of towns and cities across the United States over the weekend. Demonstrators linked the death to President Donald Trump's policy of deploying ICE officers into cities, with many expressing they are "living in fear".
The location of the shooting, roughly one mile from where George Floyd was murdered in 2020, has drawn stark parallels and amplified outrage. An FBI investigation is underway, though Minnesota officials have complained of being frozen out of the federal probe.
As tributes are laid for Renee Good, a mum-of-three who had recently moved to Minneapolis, the incident underscores the deep tensions surrounding immigration enforcement and the use of lethal force in American communities.
