According to an investigation, a tow boat captain heroically saved Ryan Dieter, 40, from a boat that was actively burning, bringing him aboard the rescue vessel. However, instead of gratitude, Dieter is alleged to have immediately pushed the captain overboard into the water, leaving him stranded. Dieter then took control of the tow boat and fled, steering it onto the banks before abandoning it and escaping on foot.

Authorities later located Dieter naked in nearby mangroves, while the captain was found safe and unharmed.
