Penny Lancaster, the model and television personality married to legendary singer Rod Stewart, has disclosed that she is temporarily stepping away from her duties as a special constable in London. The announcement came during a recent appearance on BBC's The One Show, where Lancaster cited a leg injury as the reason for her hiatus.
Injury Forces Temporary Withdrawal
Speaking to hosts Alex Jones and Lauren Laverne on Tuesday, March 3, Lancaster explained that she is currently recovering from an Achilles problem. "I absolutely love it," she said of her police role. "I currently have got a bit of an Achilles injury so I'm getting there." When asked by Jones if she would return, Lancaster confidently affirmed, "I'll be back," emphasising her commitment to the position.
Journey to Becoming a Special Constable
Lancaster's path to becoming a special constable began in 2019 after she participated in the Channel 4 reality programme Famous And Fighting Crime. The show provided her with an immersive experience volunteering with Cambridgeshire Police, which she described as "terrifying" yet profoundly fulfilling. In a 2020 Instagram Live chat, she revealed, "I never felt more comfortable in a position and I felt like this was where I was supposed to be." Following this, she enrolled in training to officially become a special constable, dedicating herself to the volunteer role.
Insights into Police Work in London
During her conversation on The One Show, Lancaster shared details about her weekly patrols in the City of London, primarily conducted on foot. She highlighted the diverse nature of the job, stating, "No day on the job is the same for you is it?" When questioned about common incidents, she noted that phone theft and bag snatching are predominant issues currently. Lancaster emphasised the importance of public awareness, advising people to be more observant of their surroundings, especially as warmer weather encourages outdoor socialising. "It's just making people more aware," she said, referencing scenarios like leaving bags unattended or using phones in vulnerable positions.
Lancaster's injury has temporarily sidelined her from these active duties, but her vow to return underscores her dedication to serving the community. Her role as a special constable continues to draw public interest, blending her celebrity status with a genuine passion for law enforcement. As she recovers, fans and colleagues alike await her return to the streets of London, where she has become a familiar face in crime prevention efforts.
