The Tragic Murder of Harry Potter Actor Rob Knox
Just days after completing filming for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, 18-year-old actor Rob Knox was brutally stabbed to death in a horrific attack outside a London pub. The young star, who portrayed Marcus Belby in the beloved franchise, was defending his younger brother Jamie, who witnessed the entire murder unfold before his eyes.
A Brother's Harrowing Testimony
"It happened in front of me," Jamie Knox recalled during an emotional appearance on The Jeremy Kyle Show. "I didn't see a knife go in, but I saw Rob go up to get the knives off the boy. This kid was just swinging his arms around with knives towards people. I'll never forget it."
Jamie described turning around and screaming before seeing his brother slumped over, holding himself with his arms. "He was saying, 'I've been stabbed, I've been stabbed,'" Jamie remembered with palpable anguish.
The Attack and Its Aftermath
The fatal incident occurred outside the Metro Bar in Sidcup, southeast London, where Rob had rushed to protect his 17-year-old brother after learning that Karl Bishop had threatened Jamie. Bishop, then 21, stabbed Rob five times and injured four of his friends during the violent confrontation.
Among the seriously injured were Dean Saunders, 23, who suffered permanent spinal damage from a neck wound, and Andrew Dormer, 17, who was stabbed in the chest while attempting to disarm Bishop.
Rob was rushed to hospital where his family endured an agonizing 45-minute wait in the A&E department. Jamie knew his brother was gone when he saw a doctor and police officer approaching them. "'I'm sorry, he's passed away,' are words you shouldn't be hearing," he recalled.
The Killer's Chilling Indifference
Karl Bishop, who had a previous conviction for a knife attack on two men and habitually carried knives, showed remarkable indifference when informed he was being charged with murder. According to PC Craig Reid's trial testimony, Bishop responded with "yeah sweet" and appeared quite calm before becoming angry about missing a Ricky Hatton boxing match.
Prosecutors revealed that Bishop had acted out of revenge, claiming he had lost a fight with Jamie and his friends the week before the murder.
Trial and Sentencing
Bishop was ultimately convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years. Throughout the proceedings, he displayed no remorse, refusing to hear victim impact statements, smiling at friends in the courtroom, and even giggling at one point.
During sentencing, the judge told Bishop: "I do not think it is proved that you intended to kill Robert Knox. But the truth is that you simply could not care less whether you killed him or not. Your lack of regret let alone remorse was truly chilling."
Rob Knox's Legacy
Rob's devastated family established the Rob Knox Foundation to help young people pursue acting careers. His mother Sally later spoke about the profound pain of attending the Harry Potter premiere without her son.
"All he wanted to do was get his dinner suit and walk up that red carpet at Leicester Square," she said. "He was a joker, he was a lovely normal kid. Didn't mix with the wrong people. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Warner Brothers created a film of outtakes featuring Rob for his family, which Sally described as her "happy place."
A Promising Career Cut Short
Rob Knox's acting career began with a small role in ITV police drama The Bill, followed by appearances on Channel 4's Trust Me, I'm a Teenager and BBC comedy After You're Gone. His breakthrough came with the role of Marcus Belby in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which was released posthumously in 2009.
Although his character doesn't appear in the seventh novel, Rob had already signed on to reprise his role in the final installment of the Harry Potter film series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, making his untimely death an even greater tragedy for the film community and his loved ones.
