Three Additional Suspects Detained in Jewish Ambulance Arson Investigation
Three more individuals have been arrested by police in connection with a serious arson attack targeting four Jewish community ambulances in north-west London. The arrests occurred on Wednesday at separate addresses in east London, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the incident that has shocked local communities.
Details of the Arrests and Investigation
The suspects include two British men aged 19 and 20, along with a 17-year-old dual British-Pakistani national. All three have been detained on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life. Police are currently conducting searches of their residences as part of the investigative process.
This brings the total number of arrests to five in relation to the attack, which occurred in the early hours of March 23rd. Two other British men, aged 45 and 47, were arrested last week and have since been released on bail until late April while investigations continue.
The Attack on Hatzola Ambulances
The targeted vehicles belonged to Hatzola, a volunteer-led ambulance service operating primarily in the Golders Green area of north-west London. The arson attack caused significant damage, with gas canisters stored inside the ambulances exploding as a result of the fire.
CCTV footage from the scene showed three hooded figures apparently pouring accelerant on the vehicles before setting them alight. The incident has been widely condemned as an antisemitic attack targeting essential community services.
Political and Community Response
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the incident as a "horrific antisemitic attack" and called for communities to "all stand together" in response. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis expressed particular distress, noting that the targeting of a volunteer ambulance service was "particularly sickening."
The attack occurred just before the Passover festival, heightening concerns within Jewish communities about their safety and security during this important religious period.
Counter-Terrorism Investigation
Counter Terrorism Policing London is leading the investigation, with Commander Helen Flanagan stating: "Since this appalling attack last week, we have been working continuously to investigate and identify those responsible." She added that while concern among the Jewish community remains high, the arrests demonstrate police commitment to bringing perpetrators to justice.
Investigators are examining claims by a suspected Iran-backed group called Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia that it was responsible for the attack. A video posted on Telegram featured a map of the ambulance location and footage of the vehicles on fire.
Enhanced Security Measures
In response to the attack, the Metropolitan Police has implemented substantial security enhancements. An additional 264 officers have been deployed alongside specialist teams including firearms units, mounted branch officers, and drone operators to boost security for Jewish communities during the Passover period.
Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, who leads policing in North West London, explained: "We have put in place an enhanced, bespoke policing plan focused around vulnerable areas not only in Golders Green, but right across London."
He emphasized that these are precautionary measures rather than responses to specific threats, with highly visible armed police patrols serving as deterrents against further attacks.
Community Support and Information Appeal
Police have praised the support received from local communities since the attack and continue to work closely with community representatives to address concerns. Commander Flanagan noted the "incredible" community support that has assisted the investigation.
Authorities are appealing for anyone with information about the attack to come forward. Information can be provided to police by calling 101 and quoting reference 415 of March 23, or anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or online.
The investigation remains active as police work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack and identify all those involved in planning and executing this serious criminal act against community emergency services.
