Sir Alex Ferguson was renowned for his iron-fisted rule at Manchester United, but according to former Red Devils defender Rio Ferdinand, there was one person who could slip past his steely exterior and even mock him without repercussions: the club's beloved dinner lady, Carol.
Ferguson's Favourite Dinner Lady
During his 26-year tenure at Old Trafford, Ferguson cultivated an atmosphere of total authority, keeping players and staff respectfully deferential. However, Carol was not one to stand on ceremony. Ferdinand recalled an incident in 2020 when Ferguson walked into the training ground wearing a smart pair of cream chinos. Carol stopped her conversation with Ferdinand and bluntly asked, "What are you wearing?!" The remark left everyone laughing, including the famously stern manager.
A Friend to All
Ferdinand described Carol as a very funny lady who treated everyone equally, from academy players to Premier League champions to Ferguson himself. She was a long-serving dinner lady at United's Carrington training base and became a familiar face to Ferdinand throughout his decade at the club. In 2020, Ferdinand reconnected with Carol as part of a BT +1 initiative to tackle loneliness during Christmas. He noted that during his 12 years at United, he saw Carol almost daily and considered her part of the club's fabric.
Zero Tolerance for Players
While Ferguson allowed Carol to tease him, he had no tolerance for dissent from his players. Over his reign, he clashed with key figures such as Roy Keane, David Beckham, Jaap Stam, and Ruud van Nistelrooy, conflicts that often resulted in the player's departure. This unwavering discipline helped propel Manchester United to unprecedented success, including 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups, and two Champions League titles. Even the most formidable dynasty, it seems, had room for the disarming wit of a down-to-earth dinner lady.
