AFL commentator Kane Cornes has sparked debate by declaring the Boxing Day cricket Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground one of the most overrated events in the world. The 43-year-old, known for his polarising opinions, compiled a list of 21 overrated things for SEN Radio, and surprisingly, some sports fans agreed with his take on the iconic sporting fixture.
Cornes' List of Overrated Things
Cornes began his list with exit row seats on planes, followed by opposition players lining up for rivals' milestone games in the AFL. He then criticised the US crime drama The Sopranos, people who keep fish as pets, and professional family photos. Superhero movies, Mad Monday costumes, surprise parties, dress-up parties, and gender reveal parties also made the list, along with matcha (Japanese green tea) and Aussie cricketer Cameron Green.
Other items included ice baths, singing happy birthday to adults, Seinfeld, expensive watches, parent-teacher interviews, and oysters. His top three most overrated things were the Boxing Day Test, lobster, and beer – a surprising choice for many Australians.
Fan Reactions
Despite the Boxing Day Test being a highlight of the Australian sporting calendar, some fans agreed with Cornes. One fan on X said, 'Hard agree: exit seats on planes, singing happy birthday and the Boxing Day Test.' Another added, 'Boxing Day Test is good when it's India or England... but probably overrated against anyone else.'
Cornes' Background
Cornes made his AFL debut in 2001 for Port Adelaide, winning a premiership in 2004 and retiring in 2015 after 300 games. He briefly worked with the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service before moving into media. The Channel Seven star is also an accomplished distance runner, with top-30 finishes at marathons in Melbourne and the Gold Coast.
