Former US President Donald Trump has publicly celebrated the announced departure of once-loyal ally Marjorie Taylor Greene from the US House of Representatives, branding her a 'traitor' in a gloating social media post.
The End of a Political Alliance
The dramatic political rupture became official when Marjorie Taylor Greene confirmed she would quit Congress on January 5, 2026. In a resignation video lasting more than ten minutes, the Georgia congresswoman stated she did not want her constituency to endure a 'hurtful and hateful primary' against her, instigated by 'the president we all fought for'.
Greene was once a staunch MAGA firebrand and defender of Donald Trump, known internationally for promoting conspiracy theories, including the infamous 'Jewish Space Lasers' claim regarding California wildfires, which led to a heated exchange with UK journalist Emily Maitlis.
Trump's Truth Social Retort
At 6:45 am Washington DC time, Trump responded on his Truth Social platform. He referred to the departing congresswoman as 'Marjorie “Traitor” Brown' and claimed her decision was motivated by 'PLUMMETING Poll Numbers' and a desire to avoid a primary challenger he would endorse.
His post elaborated, 'For some reason, primarily that I refused to return her never ending barrage of phone calls, Marjorie went BAD.' He also criticised her association with Republican congressman Tom Massie, whom he labelled 'the WORST Republican Congressman in decades'. Despite the vitriol, Trump concluded by saying, 'I will always appreciate Marjorie, and thank her for her service to our Country!'
Implications for the Conservative Movement
The very public falling-out marks a significant crack in Trump's previously unshakeable grip on his most ardent supporters. The rift developed in recent months as Greene began criticising Trump's stance on the Epstein files, foreign policy, and healthcare.
Greene's decision to step down rather than face a Trump-backed challenger follows a pattern seen with other Republicans who have dared to oppose the former president. In her resignation video, recorded with a Christmas tree in the background, Greene asserted, 'my self-worth is not defined by a man, but instead by God.'
