Local Elections 2026: Everything You Need to Know

Local elections are taking place for 136 local authorities on 7 May 2026, including some of the largest cities in the country and the whole of London. Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm.

Can I Still Register to Vote?

The deadline for voter registration, postal votes, and proxy votes has now passed. If you are registered, you should have received a polling card with details of your nearest polling station. If you haven't received one but believe you are registered, contact your electoral registration office immediately.

Do I Need My Polling Card to Vote?

You can only vote at the polling station location specified on your polling card. However, you do not need to bring the card with you to vote. If you have lost it or forgotten it, you can still cast your ballot.

Do I Need to Bring ID?

Yes, you must bring Photo ID to vote in these local elections. Accepted forms include a UK passport or a UK or Northern Ireland photocard driving licence. A full list of acceptable ID is available on the official website.

How Do I Cast My Vote?

When you arrive at the polling station, a volunteer will give you a ballot paper and direct you to a polling booth. Simply follow the instructions on the ballot paper to cast your vote. Mark your choice clearly and place the paper in the ballot box.
