A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of selling the stolen mobile phone belonging to former Downing Street chief of staff Morgan McSweeney, Scotland Yard has confirmed. The device, however, has not yet been recovered.

Arrest and Bail Details

The suspect was taken into police custody last Wednesday at an address in Peckham, south London, and was later released on bail. According to the Metropolitan Police, he is suspected of receiving the phone after it was stolen and subsequently selling it on. The force emphasised that he is not suspected of any involvement in the original theft, which occurred on October 20 last year.

Theft Incident

The phone was stolen in Belgrave Road, Pimlico, on that date. Concerns have been raised that the theft could result in the loss of important messages, particularly those relating to the appointment of Lord Peter Mandelson as the US ambassador.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson stated: “Officers investigating the theft of a mobile phone in Belgrave Road, Pimlico, on October 20 2025 have arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of handling stolen goods. The arrest took place on Wednesday April 29 at an address in Peckham. The man was taken into police custody and later bailed. He is suspected of receiving the phone after it was stolen and then selling it on. He is not suspected of any involvement in the original theft. The phone has not been recovered.”
