This Morning Star Ashley James Breaks Down in Tears Over Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor Arrest

This Morning presenter Ashley James broke down in tears during a segment discussing the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, expressing a profound sense of relief as the former prince was taken into custody. The emotional moment unfolded on Friday's episode of the ITV show, following Andrew's arrest on Thursday, 19 February 2026, on suspicion of misconduct in a public office.

Emotional Reaction to Virginia Giuffre's Family Interview

The discussion began with a clip featuring an interview with the family of Virginia Giuffre, the late accuser of financier Jeffrey Epstein. James, visibly moved, stated through tears, "I feel very emotional watching this, actually. There's a reason I feel so upset about it. So many of us have watched the survivors of Jeffrey Epstein try to get justice and I felt a huge sense of relief yesterday watching Andrew be arrested."

She clarified that the arrest pertains to state matters rather than the alleged sexual abuse accusations made by Giuffre, who died by suicide in April 2025 at age 41. Giuffre had accused Epstein of sex trafficking and claimed to have met Andrew through his friend, alleging three sexual encounters with him in her posthumous memoir, Nobody’s Girl. Andrew has consistently denied these allegations, disputing ever meeting Giuffre and suggesting a photograph of them together was edited.

Background of the Case and Legal Settlements

In 2022, Andrew reportedly paid £12 million to Giuffre to settle a civil sexual assault case out of court. James, who recently revealed she was raped while at university approximately 17 years ago, connected her personal experience to the broader systemic issues. "As a survivor of sexual assault, you question the system that makes it so difficult for survivors to speak out," she said, commending Giuffre's bravery. "If she hadn't come forward, we may not have learnt this about Andrew."

Giuffre's brother, Skye Roberts, emphasized in the interview clip, "We have to acknowledge that we wouldn't be here without my sister and the brave survivors who have come forward."

Recent Scrutiny and Epstein Files Release

The arrest follows renewed scrutiny fueled by the release of approximately three million 'Epstein files' documents by the US Department of Justice in late January 2026. These files include emails, photographs, videos, and deposition notes that have been analyzed by journalists and the public. Among the contents are a photograph of Andrew on all fours over a redacted woman and multiple emails between Andrew, his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, and Epstein.

The documents also reveal emails suggesting Epstein considered investing in the defunct record company EMI to gain access to women. Andrew is not the only British public figure facing consequences over Epstein ties; Lord Peter Mandelson was dismissed as UK ambassador to the US in September 2025 after revelations about his relationship with Epstein, whom he once called his "best pal." Mandelson resigned from the House of Lords and the Labour Party earlier in February 2026 following further emails in the Epstein files that indicated he shared confidential government information with the disgraced billionaire.
