BBC Apologises After Snooker Coverage Disrupted by Power Outage

The BBC has issued an apology after its coverage of the Snooker World Championships was unexpectedly interrupted due to a power fault at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

Technical Glitch Forces Wildlife Show

During the semi-final match between Northern Ireland's Mark Allen and China's Wu Yize, the broadcast was abruptly cut, and viewers were instead shown a wildlife programme. The disruption occurred at 19:51, with the screen going blank for approximately 12 minutes before coverage resumed on BBC iPlayer and TNT. However, difficulties persisted on BBC Two.

A statement from the broadcaster read: "We are sorry for the break in this programme and are trying to correct the fault. Please stay with us we are experiencing some technical faults." Several voiceovers followed before the wildlife show began airing.

Allen Maintains Composure

Despite the disruption, Mark Allen remained focused and managed to win the third frame while the BBC's coverage was down. When pictures were restored, presenter Hazel Irvine explained the situation: "Welcome back to Sheffield and our apologies for the interruption... We had a rather unexpected power issue. Nothing to do with not feeding the meter I assure you! We lost power but Mark Allen did not, he took frame three to get his semi-final campaign underway."

Allen then continued his strong performance, compiling a break of 76 in the fourth frame to level the match at 2-2. Former world champion Steve Davis commented on Allen's composure: "It was obvious when the screens went blank... Mark Allen was aware something had happened and how good a performance to keep his standard up without getting confused by what was going on. Nobody knew what to do and amazingly it happened again but he still kept his composure."

Background to the Semi-Final

Allen had battled through a thrilling quarter-final clash against Barry Hawkins earlier in the week to secure his place in his third World Championship semi-final. Yize defeated Hossein Vafaei to advance to the last four alongside John Higgins and Shaun Murphy, with all four players competing for a place in Monday's showpiece final.

The BBC has assured viewers that the issue was resolved and coverage returned to normal shortly after the interruption.
