The Secret Life of Jeffrey Epstein's Last Girlfriend
While hundreds of young women passed through Jeffrey Epstein's sordid world, very few achieved the status of being called his girlfriend. Beyond the notorious Ghislaine Maxwell, who received a 20-year prison sentence for trafficking girls on his behalf, another woman remained constantly at his side during the final decade of his life.
The Belarusian Dentist Who Nearly Became Mrs. Epstein
Karyna Shuliak, a Belarusian-born qualified dentist more than 35 years Epstein's junior, was possibly the last person to speak to the convicted paedophile before his death in August 2019. According to newly released documents from the US Department of Justice, Epstein intended Shuliak to inherit the majority of his vast fortune.
A Russian friend of Shuliak revealed to The Mail on Sunday that their relationship was "tempestuous and passionate, based on love." The friend described Shuliak as "madly in love" with Epstein, earning the nickname "the inspector" due to her jealous investigations into his contacts.
The Inheritance That May Never Materialise
Two days before his death at age 66, Epstein signed a will naming Shuliak as primary beneficiary. The intended inheritance included:
- His £20 million Zorro Ranch in New Mexico
- A £7.3 million Paris flat
- His infamous New York townhouse, sold for £37.3 million
- A £13.5 million Palm Beach estate
- Two US Virgin Islands sold for £44 million in 2023
Epstein's estate was valued at approximately £330 million at his death, but recent court filings suggest this has dwindled to £88 million due to fees, taxes, and restitution payments to victims. The question remains how much, if anything, will ultimately reach Shuliak.
A Relationship Documented in Millions of Pages
The latest cache of over three million documents reveals intimate details of their decade-long relationship. Shuliak reportedly came to the US in 2010 at age 20 after striking up an email friendship with Epstein, despite him being a registered sex offender recently released from prison.
Their correspondence shows affectionate exchanges with pet names like "Bumpy" and "Wowie," and declarations of love in Russian. However, the documents also reveal Shuliak's jealousy over other women in Epstein's life and his continued abuse of young girls behind her back.
Epstein's Generosity and Manipulation
Epstein facilitated Shuliak's immigration status through a sham marriage with Jennifer Kalin, a US citizen in his orbit. He hired immigration lawyer Arda Beskardes, who secured her Green Card and eventual US citizenship.
His financial support extended to her dental education at Columbia University's Teachers College, where she gained admission after Epstein made a $100,000 donation to the Dean. Columbia University has since stated that a student was admitted via an "irregular process" that didn't meet their standards.
Shuliak's parents in Minsk also benefited significantly, with wire transfers totalling $80,000 and Epstein paying for her mother's breast cancer treatment at Mount Sinai hospital in New York.
Living the High Life
Documents reveal Shuliak developed expensive tastes, with credit card bills showing:
- $13,539 spent at Bloomingdale's during one shopping spree
- High-end restaurant bills including $874 for a single takeaway order
- $880 marked for personal beauty products
She involved herself in managing Epstein's properties, supervising purchases of furnishings and staff uniforms, and traveled extensively with him aboard his private jet, nicknamed the Lolita Express.
The Mysterious End and Uncertain Future
Shuliak was reportedly with Epstein when FBI agents arrested him on July 6, 2019, as they returned from Paris. After his death a month later, she became "depressed" according to friends, leaving them "worried about her very complicated situation."
Now 36, Shuliak rarely appears in public and reportedly lives in a New York apartment building owned by Epstein's brother Mark. Her Russian friend says she "lives in the past and hopes for his will" but acknowledges uncertainty about how long her current resources will last.
The documents also reveal an explosive 2011 email from Sarah Ferguson, the former Duchess of York, congratulating Epstein on having a baby boy. While Shuliak isn't named in relation to any child, and Epstein's brother denies the existence of secret offspring, this adds another layer of mystery to the already complex legacy of Jeffrey Epstein and those closest to him.
