Ex-MP Crispin Blunt Faces Drug Charges After Police Raid
Ex-MP Crispin Blunt Charged with Drug Possession Offences

Former Conservative MP Crispin Blunt has been formally charged with four separate drug possession offences, according to a statement released by the Crown Prosecution Service. The 65-year-old ex-parliamentarian, who previously represented the Surrey constituency of Reigate, faces one count of possessing a class A controlled substance and three counts of possessing class B drugs.

Police Investigation Leads to Charges

The charges stem from a police operation conducted at Blunt's residential address in Horley, Surrey, on October 25, 2023. Authorities initially attended the property as part of an unrelated investigation, but during their search, officers discovered what they believed to be illegal substances. This discovery prompted a separate and thorough investigation by Surrey Police, which has now resulted in criminal proceedings.

Prosecution Statement on Evidence

Malcolm McHaffie, who leads the CPS Special Crime Division, confirmed the decision to prosecute. "We have determined there is sufficient evidence to bring this case before the courts," McHaffie stated. "After careful review, we concluded that pursuing criminal proceedings serves the public interest. Our prosecutors have collaborated closely with Surrey Police throughout their investigative work."

McHaffie emphasized the active nature of the legal process, reminding media outlets and the public about the defendant's right to a fair trial. "It is absolutely vital that no reporting, commentary, or online sharing of information occurs that could potentially prejudice these proceedings," he cautioned.

Specific Substances Identified

Court documents reveal that the class A drug in question is alleged to be methylamphetamine, a potent stimulant. The three class B substances are identified as GBL (gamma-butyrolactone), cannabis, and amphetamine. These charges represent serious violations of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, carrying potential significant penalties upon conviction.

Upcoming Court Appearance

Crispin Blunt is scheduled to make his initial appearance at Westminster Magistrates' Court on March 25, 2026. This hearing will mark the beginning of formal legal proceedings against the former parliamentarian, who served as MP for Reigate from 1997 until he stood down prior to the 2024 general election.

The case has drawn considerable attention given Blunt's former position in public office. During his parliamentary career, he served as a justice minister and chaired the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, making these charges particularly noteworthy within political circles.

Blunt's legal representatives have not yet issued any public statement regarding the charges. The former MP will have the opportunity to enter a plea during his upcoming court appearance, where further details about the prosecution's case are expected to emerge.
