Tottenham Hotspur legend Glenn Hoddle has disclosed that he offered his services as manager to the club before Igor Tudor was dismissed. Hoddle, 68, who made 490 appearances for Spurs between 1975 and 1987 and later managed the team from 2001 to 2003, proposed a return to the dugout amid the club's dire season.
Hoddle's Offer
Speaking on The Jeff Stelling Show, Hoddle revealed that after Tottenham's 3-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest—which proved to be Tudor's final match—he and fellow Spurs legend Ossie Ardiles approached the club. "Ossie and I made it clear that we would go in there if they wanted us to go in there," Hoddle said. "It looked to me as if it needed some love, it needed some people to go in there and unite the fans."
However, the offer was not taken up. "It was sort of looked upon and they said they were looking elsewhere," Hoddle added. "So it was fine by me. I don't care who has the job. I'm a Spurs man through and through since 8 years of age. So as long as they've got the right man in..."
Tottenham's Struggles
Tottenham are in danger of relegation from the Premier League for the first time. Tudor's seven-game stint yielded just one point, and the club subsequently appointed former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian has one win, one draw, and one defeat in three matches, leaving Spurs two points from safety with four games remaining. They face Aston Villa, Leeds, Chelsea, and Everton in their final fixtures.
Hoddle, whose last managerial role ended in July 2006 with Wolves, has mainly worked as a pundit since. He led Spurs to the League Cup final in 2002 but was sacked in September 2003 after two mid-table finishes.
