Buckingham Palace has issued a statement revealing King Charles's "profound concern" regarding serious allegations against Prince Andrew, the Duke of York. The monarch's stance comes amid claims that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor shared confidential documents from his former role as a UK trade envoy with the convicted paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Palace Statement on Allegations
A Buckingham Palace spokesman emphasised the King's position, stating, "The King has made clear, in words and through unprecedented actions, his profound concern at allegations which continue to come to light in respect of Mr Mountbatten-Windsor's conduct." The Palace further clarified that while the specific claims are for Andrew to address personally, they are prepared to cooperate fully with law enforcement.
Police Assessment Underway
Thames Valley Police has confirmed it is currently assessing the allegations that Prince Andrew improperly disclosed sensitive trade reports to Epstein. The police force has not yet formally approached the Palace regarding this matter, but Buckingham Palace has proactively declared its readiness to assist. "If we are approached by Thames Valley Police we stand ready to support them as you would expect," the Palace spokesman affirmed.
Focus on Victims and Accountability
In the statement, the Palace reiterated the royal family's ongoing sympathy for victims of abuse. "As was previously stated, Their Majesties' thoughts and sympathies have been, and remain with, the victims of any and all forms of abuse," the spokesman said. This underscores a commitment to accountability and support for those affected by such crimes, aligning with broader public expectations for transparency.
The allegations centre on Andrew's tenure as a trade envoy, a role from which he stepped back in 2011 following previous controversies linked to Epstein. The claims suggest a breach of confidentiality that could have implications for national interests and diplomatic relations. As the police assessment progresses, the Palace's statement signals a clear distance from Andrew's actions while maintaining a cooperative stance with investigative authorities.
