Netflix subscribers can now stream a gripping British crime drama that recounts the true story of a chilling double murder from the 1990s. The four-part series, titled The Secret, originally aired on ITV a decade ago and has recently gained renewed attention on the streaming platform.

A True Crime Thriller Set in Northern Ireland

The Secret is set in Northern Ireland and tells the disturbing true story of the 1991 double murder committed by Colin Howell and Hazel Buchanan. As described by Netflix, the plot follows a dentist and a Sunday school teacher who begin a torrid extramarital affair, leading them to make a murderous pact. The series is based on Deric Henderson's true crime book Let This Be Our Secret and depicts how Howell and Buchanan plotted the murders of their respective spouses. They then staged the deaths as a suicide pact, a crime they managed to conceal for nearly two decades.

Star-Studded Cast

The lead role of Colin Howell is portrayed by Irish actor James Nesbitt, known for his performances in Cold Feet, Bloodlands, The Missing, and Murphy's Law. Opposite him, Genevieve O'Reilly, star of Andor, plays Hazel Buchanan. The cast also includes Laura Pyper from Hex and Glen Wallace from Hollyoaks as the victims. Additionally, Jason Watkins, who has appeared in The Crown, Trollied, and McDonald and Dodds, stars as Pastor John Hansford.
