Menace II Society Actor Samuel Monroe Jr. on Life Support, Now on Dialysis
Samuel Monroe Jr. on Life Support, Now on Dialysis

Actor Samuel Monroe Jr., best known for his role in the 1993 crime drama Menace II Society, has been placed on dialysis following severe kidney complications as he continues to fight for his life in a Southern California hospital. The 52-year-old performer, currently on life support, was diagnosed with failing kidneys, his wife Shawna Stewart confirmed to TMZ on Thursday.

This distressing update arrives just two days after Stewart revealed on Tuesday that Monroe had recently been diagnosed with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) pneumonia, a serious lung infection. Stewart noted that doctors have initiated a new antibiotic regimen to combat the bacteria, but the family can only wait to see if the treatments prove effective.

According to Healthline, patients with MRSA pneumonia often experience inflamed lungs filled with fluid or pus, making breathing difficult. The condition is frequently contracted in hospitals and is resistant to several antibiotics, complicating treatment. If not addressed promptly, MRSA pneumonia can lead to potentially deadly sepsis, where the body attacks its own tissues, and septic shock, causing a dangerous drop in blood pressure and organ failure.

Career and Family

Monroe is widely recognized for his role in Menace II Society, which also starred Samuel L. Jackson, Tyrin Turner, and Jada Pinkett Smith. His other film credits include Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, Set It Off, and Tales from the Hood, alongside television appearances in Out All Night and NYPD Blue. More recently, he has worked as a director, writer, and producer, creating the TV series The Halls, which explores the experiences of children entering the juvenile hall system.

Monroe is married to Shawna Stewart, a corporate tech executive and voice actor. The couple has two children: 12-year-old Kingston and 11-year-old Brooklynn.

Family's Plea and Fundraiser

Monroe's mother, Joyce Patton, expressed her anguish on Facebook, writing: 'God don't make no mistakes, but he is gracious, and I am humbly asking for his mercy and grace for Sam. I love you, son, to the moon and back 100 times.'

A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with medical expenses. The page states: 'Every donation, no matter the size, will help ease the burden on Samuel's family and ensure that Kingston and Brooklynn have the support they need while their father fights for his life.' The fundraiser also reveals that Monroe has undergone two brain surgeries and remains on life support.

Ongoing Health Battle

Stewart told Complex that Monroe's health struggles began approximately 18 months ago while he was filming in Las Vegas, where he contracted meningitis. She explained that his condition was repeatedly misdiagnosed across several hospitals, allowing the infection to go untreated for eight months. By the time it was correctly identified, the meningitis had spread to his spine and brain. Stewart urged the public to keep Monroe in their prayers as he remains on life support.

In Menace II Society, Monroe portrayed Ilena's cousin, a character who seeks revenge after the protagonist Caine, played by Tyrin Turner, impregnates Ilena and stomps on Monroe's character. This leads to a drive-by shooting that results in Caine's death at the film's conclusion. Monroe's latest role was as Zero in the 2022 television film Shine Kings, and he also starred in the 2021 film Lockdown 2025, which centers on a virus outbreak and nationwide lockdown. Additionally, Monroe pursued a rap career, working with producers such as Battlecat and Duane Nettlesby.
