A British national born in Somalia has been charged with attempted murder following the stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green, north London. Essa Suleiman, 45, was set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday after the charges were announced earlier that day.
The Attack and Victims
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, leaving Shloime Rand, 34, and Moshe Ben Baila, 76, with knife wounds. Both victims were taken to hospital for treatment. The attack took place in the predominantly Jewish area of Golders Green, sparking widespread concern over rising antisemitism.
Prime Minister’s Response
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer visited the scene on Thursday to meet first responders and community leaders. During his visit, he was heckled by protesters who accused his government of failing to protect the Jewish community. Addressing the nation from Downing Street, Starmer condemned the attack and antisemitism, stating, “This government will do everything in our power to stamp this hatred out, we will strengthen our security and protect our Jewish community. But I also call on everyone decent in this country to open their eyes to Jewish pain, Jewish suffering and Jewish fear.”
Community Reaction
Jewish leaders have warned that antisemitism is becoming normalised in the UK. The attack has intensified calls for stronger measures to combat hate crimes and protect minority communities. The suspect, Essa Suleiman, remains in custody pending his court appearance.
