Sir Stephen Fry is pursuing legal action against CogX Festival Limited and Blonstein Events, seeking up to £100,000 in damages following a serious fall from a stage at the O2 Arena in September 2023. The incident occurred after the 68-year-old actor, comedian, and presenter delivered a talk on artificial intelligence during the CogX festival.
Details of the Incident
According to High Court documents, Fry fell approximately two metres from the stage, sustaining multiple fractures to his leg, hip, pelvis, and ribs. The fall took place in a backstage area that the claimant alleges was unsafe.
Legal Claims
The lawsuit alleges negligence and/or breach of statutory duty by the defendants. Specifically, it claims that the stage and backstage area were not adequately lit, lacked proper protection, and were not maintained to a safe standard. The defendants have yet to file a defence, and no court hearing has been scheduled.
Fry is known for his work in comedy, literature, and broadcasting, and has been a prominent figure in British culture for decades. The fall has had a significant impact on his health and mobility, prompting the legal action to recover compensation for his injuries and associated costs.
