Netflix's eerie cult thriller Unchosen has become the number one show on the streaming platform in the UK, captivating audiences with its dark narrative centered on a mysterious escaped convict named Sam Devlin, portrayed by Fra Fee.
The Plot of Unchosen
The series follows Rosie (Molly Windsor), a subservient wife and mother trapped in a repressive Christian cult who yearns for a different life. Her path crosses with Sam, an escaped convict carrying a traumatic past, who tempts her with promises of a better existence. As the story unfolds, Rosie must grapple with whom she can truly trust.
Sam's Horrific Crimes
Sam and Rosie first meet when Rosie's daughter Grace (Olivia Pickering) runs into the woods during a storm and is found floating in a river. Sam emerges from nowhere and rescues the girl. Drawn back to the cult, Sam introduces himself as a man on the run from the law, but initially withholds the details of his crimes.
In the series finale, Rosie pieces together Sam's true nature. He confesses that at age 16, he murdered his first girlfriend after she threatened to leave him. He also killed his girlfriend's cousin, who was incarcerated with him. As Sam develops an obsession with Rosie, viewers fear she may suffer the same fate.
Sam's Manipulation of Adam
Later in the series, Sam perceives that Rosie's husband Adam (Asa Butterfield) is concealing his sexuality. Sensing Adam's attraction to him, Sam manipulates Adam into performing a sexual act while secretly recording it on his phone. He uses the footage to blackmail Adam in the twisted finale.
Sam's sexuality remains ambiguous; he has had relationships with women and is attracted to Rosie, but he exploits Adam's secret for control. He may be bisexual or simply opportunistic.
Unchosen is now streaming on Netflix.
