Liberal Democrats Would Support Legislation to Remove Prince Andrew from Line of Succession
Sir Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, has stated that his party would back parliamentary legislation to remove Prince Andrew from the line of succession to the British throne. Speaking at the Scottish Liberal Democrats conference in Edinburgh, Sir Ed described the potential scenario of Andrew succeeding as monarch as "intolerable."
Davey Calls Prospect 'Not as Remote as Some Think'
Sir Ed emphasised that the possibility of Andrew ascending to the throne is "not as remote as some people think," particularly when considering potential tragedies within the royal family. He stressed the importance of taking action while ensuring it does not prejudice ongoing police investigations.
"Yes. I think it would be intolerable for Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor to succeed to the Crown," Davey told the Press Association. "It's not as remote as some people think – if you look at a few tragedies."
Focus on Victims of Epstein
The Liberal Democrat leader highlighted that the victims of Jeffrey Epstein and those who visited his private island should remain at the forefront of public consideration regarding this matter. "You've got to remember the victims of Epstein and the people who went to his island, those women and girls," Davey said. "They should be at the forefront of our minds as we think about these things."
Government Pledge and International Implications
The current government under Sir Keir Starmer has pledged to consider introducing legislation to remove Andrew from the line of succession once police investigations conclude. However, any changes to the succession would require agreement from other Commonwealth realms that share the British monarch, including:
- Australia
- Canada
- Jamaica
Ongoing Police Investigation
Police searches continued at Andrew's former residence, Royal Lodge in Windsor, Berkshire, on Saturday. This follows his arrest on Thursday morning on suspicion of misconduct in public office after allegations emerged from files related to convicted paedophile billionaire Jeffrey Epstein.
The Liberal Democrat position adds significant political weight to calls for constitutional changes regarding the royal succession, with Davey making clear his party's readiness to support legislative action when the time is appropriate.
