The recall follows a fatal event on March 7 in Akron, Ohio. Authorities reported that emergency services were called to a Restaurant Depot on Sweitzer Avenue after a 911 caller alerted them to "a child under a chair in the car." The victim, a toddler from Cuyahoga Falls, was seated in the third row of a Hyundai Palisade when a power-folding seat unexpectedly collapsed, trapping her.

Investigators detailed that the child's mother was inside the vehicle with another child at the time, while the father had briefly entered a nearby store. The exact mechanism that activated the seat remains unclear, but police believe the release was triggered, causing the seat to fold and compress the child.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Bystanders worked frantically for several minutes to free the girl before emergency crews arrived and transported her to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The Summit County Medical Examiner has officially ruled the death an accident, attributing it to compression by the power-folding seat.

In a statement, Hyundai expressed its awareness of the tragic incident involving a Palisade, extending its deepest sympathies to the family while noting that the investigation is ongoing and full details are not yet available.

Technical Defect and Safety Measures

Hyundai has identified the issue as a potential failure in the seat system's occupant detection capability. In certain scenarios, the system may not properly recognize people or objects during folding or sliding operations, thereby increasing the risk of injury.
